Description

Creuset.

Crucible. The invention relates to a crucible for heat treatment of metals in salt baths.

Currently, to carry out these treatments, in particular to heat pieces of steel to be quenched in a salt bath, either one-piece metal crucibles or graphite crucibles are used.

One-piece metal crucibles have the defect that the crucible deteriorates at high temperatures under the action of atmospheric oxygen which attacks its walls, which thereby become thinner and quickly become unusable. Those in graphite, on the other hand, are deteriorated at high temperatures, by the action of salts on the acid constituents, such as. silicates, aluminates etc., contained in large quantities in the graphite of the crucible, which cracks or flakes.

The object of the invention is a crucible in two parts: a refractory and relatively stainless outer casing and an inner coating, easily removable, of a material resistant to the action of salts at high temperatures, a certain interval being maintained. between these two walls to allow the interior lining to expand freely in all directions and means being provided to isolate the interior surface of the envelope from the atmosphere. located above the level of the salt bath inside the crucible.

The appended drawing represents, by way of examples, two embodiments of the object of the invention. The two figures in the drawing are axial vertical sections of these shapes.

Referring to fig. 1, which represents the first embodiment, it can be seen that 5 designates an oven at the bottom of which are formed outlets 6 through which the overflow and the leaks of liquid salts can flow. A base 7 is fixed in the middle of the bottom of this furnace to support the crucible proper. This comprises an outer casing 8, constructed or molded from graphite or any other relatively stainless material. The flat bottom of this outer casing comes to rest on the base 7, while the upper part engages in the inlet 9 of the oven.

The oven â is covered, at its upper part, with a plate 11, in which an inlet corresponding to that of the oven is made, but having a somewhat larger section. On this plate 11 rests a circle 10 having a section in -j-, the lower part of which covers the upper surface of the outer casing 8. 12 indicates the metallic inner wall of the crucible proper, which rests, by a flange 13 which it bears at its upper part on the circle 10, so as to be maintained around its entire periphery, at a certain interval from the casing 8, of which it follows the internal shape.

This wall 12 forming a coating can be made of any metal alloy, such as for example hardened steel, wrought iron, etc. The intermediate free space between the casing 8 and the coating 12, indicated at 14, allows the expansion of the metal body 12 in all directions and in particular prevents the bottom of this body 12 from pressing on the bottom of. the casing 8, does not lift the flange 13 on the circle 10, which would allow air to enter the annular gap 14. This small volume of air which is normally in this gap 14 is expelled from it. high temperatures.

As the crucible, in use, is never completely filled by the salt bath, in order to prevent the upper part which has remained empty from being deteriorated by oxidation at high temperatures, an annular part 15 is used, the cylindrical part of which is used. 'fitting into the internal lining 12 of the crucible is of a smaller diameter than the internal diameter of this lining, so as to create an annular space 17 between it and it, the upper flange 16 of which rests on the flange 13. of the coating 12. The height of this part is calculated so that it plunges into the salt bath, thus isolating the upper part of the internal surface of the crucible from the atmosphere.

When this part 15 is deteriorated by oxidation, it can be easily replaced, which is much cheaper than replacing the entire coating 12 of the crucible. In practice, this replacement is not necessary because this part 15 continues to fulfill its protective role even when it is oxidized. Indeed, provided that the wall of this part remains airtight, its thinning does not reduce this protective role, instead of, in the absence of this part 15, the thinning of the wall of the coating 12, which must have a cross section sufficient to support the weight of the bath and its own weight, would quickly render this coating unusable.

The part 15 can be of any metal, as long as it is airtight. The oxidation by the small volume of air contained in the space 17, of the coating 12 is unimportant.

In the embodiment shown in fig.2, the crucible comprises a casing 8 'of molten steel and an inner lining 12' of rolled steel. In this way, the bath contained by the crucible cannot reach the porous envelope 8 '. This is why this outer wall 8 'effectively retains its role of protecting the inner coating for a relatively long period of time, without it being necessary to change it as a result of its oxidation.

In this form, the flange 13 of the covering 12 'rests directly on the upper edge of the casing 8'.

It can be seen that in these two embodiments, the salts contained in the crucible do not come into contact with the outer casing of the crucible of more or less stainless material, which they are liable to attack, while the coating the metallic interior, which they do not attack, is completely isolated from the oxygen of the atmosphere and the products of combustion, which would attack it if this contact existed.

The fact that the coating 12 can expand or contract freely in all directions makes it possible to solidify by cooling the liquid salts which are held there when it is desired to remove them without this presenting any danger to the crucible itself. . The inner lining of the crucible is preferably made of a metal: wrought iron or steel, containing less than 2 / o carbon, to be able to resist salts when the bath is heated to very high temperatures, for example above 1000 o vs.
