Description

piston engine. The invention has for. object a piss ton engine of the type in which each of the cylinders of a pair of parallel cylinders contains a pair of pistons acting in the opposite direction in a common working chamber, characterized in that the four pistons are coupled at opposite ends two balances, one of these balances being connected to two pistons which work one in one, and the other in the other cylinder of the pair of cylinders and which are furthest from the crank shaft of the engine, and the other beam connected to the two other pistons, which are closest to said shaft, one end of one of the balances and one end of the other balance, ends coupled to pistons contained one in one and the other in the other cylinder of the pair,

being connected to the axis of articulation of the foot of a connecting rod for the crank shaft of the engine.

The appended drawing represents, by way of examples, various embodiments of the object of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a first form; Fig. 2 and 3 are respectively front and side elevations showing a second form; Fig. 4 and 5 are analogous elevations of a third form. A indicates the cylinders, B the upper pistons, Bl the lower pistons, C the upper balancer (s), Cl the lower balancer (s) and b the piston rods articulated at the ends of these balancers. E indicates the crank shaft and F the connecting rod or rods actuating this shaft.

In the first form (fig. 1), the engine is an internal combustion engine with two cylinders A arranged symmetrically on each side of the crank shaft E. To the crank pin e of this shaft E is connected the head of the connecting rod F, the foot of which is articulated to a stick f provided with lateral skids fi sliding between guides g, integral with the frame of the machine G, G 'mounted on a base G2, which also carries the bearings g1 of the crank shaft E.

To the axis d of the butt f is linked by the arm D the left end of the upper balance C and by the arm Dl the right end of the lower balance Cl.

The lower balance Cl is freely mounted in its "middle on journals side by side by the frame G ', and the upper balance C is mounted on journals Key carried by the upper part G3 of the frame, which is connected to the body G = of the latter by ti rants y \.

The exhaust lights have, leading to the exhaust ports a 'provided in. the upper end of the cylinders, are uncovered before the intake ports do not. corresponding to the air intake openings a4, formed at the lower end of the cylinders.

In the embodiment shown schematically in FIGS. 2 and 3, the balan ciers C C ', whose arms to which are articulated the rods b of the pistons, are not shown in fig. 3, are established to be re-linked by a pair of coupling pieces D, one on each side of the cylinders. The cl axis connects these two pieces D to each other roughly in the middle, and leads to. its ends the feet of the two connecting rods h 'actuating a pair of cranks e carried by the crank shaft E.

The axis d and the connecting rod legs are connected on the side of each coupling part D, the crank shaft E being correspondingly offset. In the embodiment shown schematically in fig. 4 and 5. a single connecting rod 1 'and a single crank e are used for two pairs of cylinders A'. In this form a single axis d =, crosses the eentre of the four coupling parts D which connect the four balances C Cl.

An internal combustion engine, of the ordinary type, of, for example, 300 to 400 HP safe in brake and single cylinder requires water cooling for the pistons, while with the arrangement according to the invention it is possible use cylinders with a diameter small enough to develop the same power without the need for udder cooling.

For higher powers one can be satisfied with oil cooling, and water cooling does not become necessary due to large cylinders from 300 mm in diameter for two-stroke engines, and 425 mm in diameter for four-stroke engines.
