Description

Process for the production of a pebble dye. According to the process of the main patent, a violet vat dye is obtained by heating 1-amino-2-methyl-a.nthraquinone and sulfur with the addition of p-phenylenediamine.

It has been found that the same dye is produced if 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-aldehyde is used instead of 1-amino-2-methylantlirachinons.

Since azomethine compounds are formed in an intermediate manner, it is also advantageous to proceed in such a way that the azomethine compound is first obtained from 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-aldehyde and p-phenylenediamine by heating alone or in a suitable solvent manufactures and subjects them to sulphurization.

The addition of high-boiling diluents such as naphthalene as well as catalysts such as iodine, aluminum chloride and the like facilitates the formation of dyes and results in the formation of particularly pure products.

If the azomethine compound obtainable from 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-aldehyde and p-phenylenediamine or the corresponding mixture of the two components is treated with sulfur, a violet vat dye is obtained which corresponds in all its properties to the dye of the main patent .

Example: 10 kg of the azomethine compound obtained by condensation of 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-aldehyde and p-phenylenediamine (or a mixture of 9 kg of 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-aldehyde and 2 kg p-phenylenediamine) are heated for eight hours to about 220 minutes with 125 kg of naphthalene and 30 kg of sulfur with the addition of 0.3 kg of iodine.

The dye is deposited in the usual way by adding naphtha to the hot melt and then purified by treatment with boiling nitrobenzene. The dye obtained dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with an olive-brown color which changes to green-blue when paraformaldehyde is added. The vat available with hydrosulphite and lye is colored violet and provides violet shades of very good wash, chlorine and lightfastness on cotton. The dye is therefore identical to the dye of the main patent.
