Abstract
La invención se dirige en parte a plantas transgénicas, que incluyen plantas de tabaco transgénicas y semillas derivadas, modificadas genéticamente para impedir el trasporte de Cadmio (Cd) del sistema de raíz a las porciones aéreas de plantas transgénicas al reducir los niveles de expresión de los transportadores relacionados con HMA. La invención incluye plantas de tabaco transgénicas modificadas genéticamente para expresar establemente una construcción de ARNi que codifica polinucleótidos de ARNi que posibilitan la degradación de variantes ARN NtHMA endógenas. La expresión reducida de transportadores NtHMA en plantas transgénicas resulta en contenido sustancialmente reducido de Cadmio (Cd) en la lámina de hoja. Varios productos consumibles que son sustancialmente libres o reducidos sustancialmente en el contenido de Cd se pueden producir al incorporar hojas derivadas de plantas de tabaco transgénicas modificadas para reducir la expresión de transportadores NtHMA.
