Abstract

A method of growing yttrium-aluminium garnet mosaic-less monocrystals with flat phase boundary The invention concerns a method of growing yttrium-aluminium garnet mosaic-less monocrystals with flat phase boundary, so the cylindrical parts of the crystal have high optical homogeneity and are suitable for processing into dimensionally complex optical products, for example laser rods of large diameter or laser plates. Yttrium-aluminium garnet mosaic-less monocrystals are grown by melting from nucleus melt and flat phase boundary between the melt and crystal is achieved whereby the monocrystals are drawn in a protective atmosphere containing 50 to 98 % volume argon and/or helium and 2 to 50 % volume and the humidity of the protective atmosphere falls during the initial period of growth, i.e. before achieving a crystal length corresponding to 100 to 300 % of its greatest diameter, from 3,400 to 1,000 ppm volume to 600 to 100 ppm volume of water vapour. It is also suitable to supplement this working procedure whereby, during reduction of the humidity of the atmosphere, the content of nitrogen is modified to 0.005 to 5 % by volume.

Description

The object of the present invention is to provide a process for growing mosaic-free, flat-phase interface yttrium aluminum garnet monocrystals whose cylindrical portions exhibit the best optical homogeneity and are therefore suitable for processing into large diameter laser bars or laser plates.

Laser bars and plates for solid-state lasers are made of a wide range of active materials. Among them, the yttrium-aluminum garnet occupies a prominent place, especially with activation by neodymium ions. It is prepared mostly by melt drawing using the conical phase interface of the single crystal with the melt, which guarantees high structural and thus optical homogeneity of the majority of the single crystal cross-section. The disadvantage is the devaluation of the axial part of the single crystal cross-section with crystallographic facets and the conical shape of the cords periodically decorating the phase boundary. Facets in the axial section limit the transverse dimension of the cuts to less than the single crystal radius. The seams are approximately parallel to the direction of propagation of the laser beam in the plate utilizing reflection on the slab surfaces (slab) and cut off from the single crystal secant, i.e., to maximize the width of the plate. This also results in the representation of the cord structure in the light beam emitted by the plate thus produced. On the other hand, the yttrium-aluminum garnet monocrystals grown with a flat phase interface are without center facets, but usually have a mosaic structure, which usually arises even when this shape of the interface develops only during growth when the conical interface becomes flat by usual acceleration of rotation or since this transformation leads to a sudden acceleration of the growth rate of its peripheral part, which in particular mono-crystals containing neodymium do not tolerate without the occurrence of failures.

Said drawbacks can be overcome by the method of growing mosaic-free flat-faceted yttrium-aluminum garnet monocrystals according to the invention, characterized in that the monocrystals are drawn from the melt under a protective atmosphere containing 50 to 98 vol% argon or helium, 2 to 50 vol% hydrogen and the water content decreases during growth of the first grown portion of the single crystal having a length corresponding to 100 to 300% of its largest diameter from 3,400 to 1,000 to 600 to 10 ppm by volume. At the beginning of cultivation due to higher, but for the molybdenum crucibles still harmless water vapor content in the reducing atmosphere used, the formation of color centers in single crystal is strongly suppressed. The growing single crystal does not absorb the radiation emanating from the melt, therefore it is relatively cold and the phase boundary has the shape of a cone, which, with approximately perpendicular orientation of dislocations to the phase boundary, guarantees their disappearance into the single crystal surface. The consequent reduction of the water vapor content increases the absorption of the newly growing portion of the single crystal, resulting in a slower growth in its axial region. The phase interface is relatively slow to flatten - even if the rate of rotation of the single crystal decreases at the same time. This is also supported by the expansion of the single crystal during the growth of its first cultivated part. The increase in optical absorption of the growing single crystal by reducing the water content of the protective atmosphere is also directly proportional to the nitrogen content of the atmosphere, since nitrogen can be bound in the crystal lattice as Ν ' 3 . It is therefore appropriate to adjust the nitrogen content of the protective atmosphere to between 0.005 and 5% vol. The cylindrical part of the single crystal is devoid of structural defects and, due to its growth with a flat phase interface, does not contain crystalonomic facets.

According to the process of the present invention, a yttrium-aluminum garnet can be prepared, which is a suitable raw material for laser bars and plates of larger dimensions because of the favorable position of the phase interface cords.

Naproti tomu zcela podobné monokrystaly pěstované po celou dobu růstu v atmosféře s vlhkostí 1650 ppm objemu, kde však zploštění fázového roz hraní bylo docíleno plynulým zvyšováním otáček ze 7 min-'*' na 25 min-''' poskytly laserové desky, které při průhledu ve funkčním směru vykazovaly dvojlom až 10 mm/cm.The single crystals were grown at a constant rotation speed of 7 min -1 so that during the first 40 mm drawing, they were expanded to a final diameter of 43 mm, which was maintained until the end of the cultivation, i.e. reaching a length of 160 mm. The initial humidity was 2160 ppm by volume. After pulling out 15 mm, the drying circuit pump was started so that after pulling out 50 mm the humidity dropped to 102 ppm volume. The cultivated single crystal was inspected in polarized light in a direction perpendicular to the growth axis and it was found that at the last 115 mm growth the phase boundary was flat. 2 pieces of 6 x 28 x 110 mm laser plates with inclined front surfaces of the original cross-section of 6 x 28 mm were produced from the said part of the single crystal after pre-cutting and tempering in hydrogen at 1800 ° C for 12 h. they showed no birefringence. On the other hand, quite similar single crystals grown all the time in an atmosphere with a humidity of 1650 ppm by volume, but where the phase boundary was flattened by continuously increasing the revolutions from 7 min - '*' to 25 min - '''gave the laser plates they exhibited a birefringence of up to 10 mm / cm in the functional direction.

Nd of 18 mm diameter and 120 mm length were grown by drawing at a rate of 1 mm hl from the melt in a 250 ml molybdenum crucible housed in a molybdenum shielded heating element; The assembly, together with the drawbar, was placed in a water-cooled steel jacket with a flange on its side to which a closed-end pipe was attached. The jacket and pipe space could be separated by a flap actuated outside the jacket. A wide bowl filled with P 2 0g was stored in the tube. Traffic shell and tubes were filled with 90% Ar + 10% H 2 · Initial moisture content was 2600 ppm volume of the tube was closed flap. The N 2 range measured by mass spectrograph was less than 0.001%. Single crystal growth proceeded at a rotation speed of 5 min - '· so that after removing the 25 mm diameter to achieve the ultimate. After pulling out 20 mm, the flap was opened, bringing the atmosphere in the shell into contact with Ρ 2 0 ^. At the same time, the content of N 2 in the atmosphere was adjusted to 1.1% by volume. The cultivated monocrystals exhibited only small edge facets over the last 80 mm, because the phase boundary during the growth of this part of the monocrystal changed from originally conical to flat without mosaic. The thick brown color of the cylindrical part of the single crystal was removed by tempering in air at 1500 ° C for 48 hours. From these single crystals, laser bars with a diameter of 12 mm and a length of 75 mm could be made. If such rods were to be made of single crystals grown with a conical phase interface, the required diameter of the single crystals used was 40 to 45 mm with respect to the central facet region and the volume of the crucibles used for cultivation was 1 l.
