According to the application requirements, acrylic acid alkyl esters with curing monomers are copolymerized as "internal plasticizers" and certain proportions of unsaturated, polymerizable carboxylic acids are included in the polymerization process according to the invention and the p H value of the resulting dispersion is brought to a value on the hydrophilic or hydrophobic character of these monomers adjusted over 7 with aqueous alkalis.

Description

Anwendungsgebiet der ErfindungField of application of the invention

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of aqueous copolymer dispersions for waterproof films and coatings by emulsion polymerization.

The dispersions are suitable for the production of weather-resistant coating and coating systems on different substrates.

Charakteristik der bekannten technischen LösungenCharacteristic of the known technical solutions

It is known, on the basis of esters of acrylic acid and of methacrylic acid, especially those with monohydric aliphatic alcohols of chain length C 1 to C 6 , to produce polymers and copolymers which give excellent film materials for pigmented and unpigmented coatings on substrates of various kinds ( Ullmann's Encyclopaedia, Vol. 14,

(Ullmanns Encyklopädie, Bd. 14,Depending on the molecular weight of the alcohol component of the acrylic or methacrylic acid esters used for the construction of the polymers, important properties, such as film hardness, resistance to chemical and physical influences, adhesion to the respective substrate, pigment binding capacity and the like, are regulated. (Ullmann's Encyclopaedia, Vol. 14,

It is also customary to use a number of commercially available monomers, such as styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate or olefins, for the construction of such binders, which influence the properties of the copolymers owing to their characterizing properties and the proportion of their use (Ullmanns Enzyklopädie, Bd. 14, pp. 266-275).

AS 1 519441, H.Spoor, Reaktive Polyacrylate ..., Deutsche Farbenzeitschrift, 22/7/1968, S.307-312).A further improvement of the properties can be achieved for the various uses, if in addition to the monomers mentioned such compounds are used, in addition to the carbon double bonds capable of polymerization or copolymerization still have überfunktioneile groups under heat and / or catalysis either with each other or react with suitable polyfunctional compounds to crosslink the polymer chain. Such systems have already been described and are technically used (DT-AS 1 519441, H. Spoor, reactive polyacrylates ..., German color magazine, 22/7/1968, pp. 307-312).

AS 1 056827 and DT-AS 1 076371 describe processes which relate to the preparation and the use of crosslinkable polymers which are prepared by the use of epoxigruppenhaltigeh polymerizable compounds and those which have aldehyde groups. Also, the carboxyl group (use of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid in the copolymerization) is capable together with the epoxy group to crosslinking reactions. The addition of ammonia or other basic compounds catalyzes the crosslinking emanating from the epoxy group and has therefore been added to the polymer dispersion.

In applications where, among other properties above all a high resistance to the action of water is required, especially in the paint and coatings sector, polymers have on the basis of the monomers already mentioned and especially using the crosslinking of the polymer chain effecting Monomers, in the form of solutions in organic solvents, water or water-dilutable solutions proven (Ullmanns Enzyklopädie, Vol. 14, German color magazine, 22/7/1968, p.307-312).

When aqueous polymer dispersions are used, however, it is difficult to achieve a high z. B. the strength of the film ensuring hardness while resisting the action of water to achieve.

Thus, such films obtained by drying from polymer dispersions have the disadvantage that they show a high water absorption, tend to opacities and whitening and blistering. In addition, detachments from the substrate occur when stored on a support in the water or in a high-humidity environment.

As with the use of polymer solutions, there is a way to reduce the water sensitivity of films made from polymer dispersions. In this case, particularly hydrophobic monomers are used to build up the polymers.

Bd.XIV/1044).Acrylic acid butyl esters, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or styrene have proved to be more suitable than the monomers such as methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate or vinyl acetate (Houben-Weyl Bd.XIV / 1044).

However, all the above measures are not sufficient to raise the water resistance of the films formed to the necessary level.

Highly polar, water-soluble monomers such as acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, acrylamide or methacrylamide cause according to the known prior art in the construction of polymers whose solutions or dispersions form films, an increase in the water sensitivity of the films. It grows with the amount of the above monomers and is formed by salt formation e.g. with alkalis or ammonia in the presence of sufficient amounts of the unsaturated acids increased to water solubility. On the other hand, the use of acrylic acid and / or methacrylic acid and / or acrylamide and / or methacrylamide is required for adjusting certain properties of the polymer dispersion and of the polymer films or coatings produced therefrom.

(Makromol. Chemie 69, 220-240 [1963], Hölscher, Teil I, S. 35, Ulimanns Enzyklopädie, Bd. 14, S. 272-275).It is generally known that in particular the stability of the dispersion to mechanical stress, the storage behavior, the absorption capacity for pigments and fillers and the adhesion to many substrates is favorably influenced by these monomers. (Makromol Chemistry 69, 220-240 [1963], Hölscher, Part I, p. 35, Ulimanns Enzyklopadie, Vol. 14, pp. 272-275).

Also, the patent OS 3350339 refers to the use of epoxigruppenhaltigen monomers or polymers containing epoxigruppen, which are reacted with ammonia or amines (aminated oxirane groups or ammoniated oxirane groups).

Furthermore, the nature and amount of the polymerization aids used to prepare the polymer dispersions have an influence on the water resistance of the polymer film. It is therefore obvious to minimize the generally water-soluble emulsifiers and initiators to a minimum.

Also known is the relationship between the size of the dispersed in aqueous dispersion polymer particles and the Fiimeigenschaften.

B.It is also known to improve the water resistance of the polymer films by adding special monomers, e.g. B.

Glycidyl compounds of polymerizable monomers, reactive acrylic acid or Methacrylsäureamidderivate, hydroxyalkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid are used, which allow crosslinking of Poiymerkette.

However, the production of finely dispersed aqueous dispersions and the use of the already mentioned processes is not sufficient to substantially improve the water resistance of the films produced from the resulting dispersions.

Ziel der ErfindungObject of the invention

The object of the invention is to produce copolymers whose aqueous dispersions give films which, in addition to good adhesion to various substrates, gloss, hardness and a good binding capacity for pigments and fillers, in particular a high resistance to water.

Darlegung des Wesens der ErfindungExplanation of the essence of the invention Aufgabe der ErfindungObject of the invention

The invention has for its object to develop a process for the preparation of aqueous copolymer dispersions which give films with good performance properties, preferably with a high water resistance.

Merkmale der ErfindungFeatures of the invention

Die Aufgabe wird erfindungsgemäß dadurch gelöst, daß für den Aufbau eines CopolymerenThe object is achieved in that for the construction of a copolymer

A) esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids and diesters of unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, such as esters of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, with monohydric, preferably aliphatic, alcohols of chain length C 1 to C-ie,

B) Monmere wie Vinylhalogenide, Styren, Styrenderivate, Vinylester, Olefine sowie Diolefine,B) monomers such as vinyl halides, styrene, styrene derivatives, vinyl esters, olefins and diolefins,

C) 1 bis 10Gew.-%, vorzugsweise 1,5 bis5Gew.-%, ungesättigte Carbonsäuren, Dicarbonsäuren, Halbestern von Dicarbonsäuren oder Mischungen derselben, vorzugsweise Acrylsäure oder MethacrylsäureC) 1 to 10% by weight, preferably 1.5 to 5% by weight, of unsaturated carboxylic acids, dicarboxylic acids, half esters of dicarboxylic acids or mixtures thereof, preferably acrylic acid or methacrylic acid

Use, wherein the proportion of the monomers listed under C) on the hydrophilic character of the comonomer involved in the construction of the polymer and the aqueous copolymer dispersion after the polymerization with alkalis, preferably ammonia or volatile amines, at a temperature below 5O 0 C to a pH Value is set above 7.

The process according to the invention makes it possible to prepare aqueous copolymer dispersions which, in addition to good performance properties, such as gloss, hardness, adhesion, absorption capacity for pigments and fillers, etc.

eine besonders hohe Wasserresistenz aufweisen, wobei auf aufwendige und komplizierte Vernetzungsprozesse verzichtet werden kann.have a particularly high water resistance, which can be dispensed with complex and complicated crosslinking processes.

It was not foreseeable that by the method according to the invention, i. by the incorporation of the hydrophilic monomers described under C), the advantages described above occur.

The concomitant use of small amounts of acrylic acid, acrylamide and other special monomers is mentioned in the literature, but is not matched to the hydrophilic or hydrophobic properties of the polymer.

It was therefore extraordinarily surprising, from the point of view of the person skilled in the art, that each of the copolymer systems prepared in aqueous emulsion has a characteristic acrylic acid fraction which, after partial or better complete neutralization with ammonia or other bases, has high water resistance of the polymer films guaranteed. The examples listed clearly characterize this effect.

In the preparation according to the invention of the aqueous copolymer dispersion, it should be noted that the proportion of the unsaturated carboxylic acid or dicarboxylic acid is matched to the hydrophobic or hydrophilic character of the copolymer caused by the monomers listed under A) and B).

It is also essential that the proportion of the unsaturated carboxylic acid or dicarboxylic acid in the copolymer alone does not confer water resistance but on the contrary, in accordance with the known state of the art, an increased water sensitivity to copolymers and polymers which contain no unsaturated carboxylic acids.

The proportion of the monomers listed under A) and B) can be varied within wide limits. It is essentially determined by the requirements of hardness and film-forming temperature.

The polymerization can be carried out in a known manner according to the principle of emulsion polymerization. It is expedient to submit the aqueous phase containing the emulsifier or the emulsifier system and the initiator, and to add the monomer mixture at the predetermined polymerization temperature of, for example, 80 ° C. Also, the use of a portion of the aqueous phase with portions of the polymerization aids to prepare a mixture with the monomers and the metering of the mixture in the initially introduced aqueous phase is possible.

As emulsifiers alkyl sulfonates or alkyl sulfates having a carbon chain length of C 10 to Cis, preferably C12 to CI 6 , in an amount of 0.12 to 3 wt .-%, preferably 0.2 to 1 wt .-%, based on the monomer , be used. In addition to the above-mentioned anionic emulsifiers nonionic emulsifiers, for. B. adducts of 5 to 50 moles of ethylene oxide to alkylphenols, higher carboxylic acids, higher alcohols or polypropylene oxide in amounts of 0.3 to 2Gew .-%, based on the monomer mixture, are used. Radical-forming substances, for example inorganic peroxides or mixtures thereof or redox initiators in amounts of from 0.1 to 1.0% by weight, based on the monomer mixture, can be used as initiators.
