The invention relates to an electrolytic cell consisting of a plurality of monopolar or bipolar subcells for carrying out electrode reactions, which are preceded by relatively slow mass transport steps of the reacting component from the electrolyte phase to the electrode surface or are slowed down kinetically due to concentration decreases. The invention is preferably applicable to prevent the occurrence of diffusion limit currents and the associated limitation of the space-time yield, or the increase of the specific electrical energy consumption. It is also applicable if the process is not yet material-transport inhibited, but increase by the reaction-induced concentration degradation in the cell, the surges and thus increase the specific electrical energy consumption. A special application is z. B. in organic electrosynthesis, in which reactions are to be realized with low Depolarisatorkonzentrationen many times.
Industrial electrolysis cells and the process conditions of the electrolysis are designed so that the lowest possible cell voltages are present at the highest possible current yields and space-time yields. The interconnection of many sub-cells is often a gradual reduction in concentration of the electrochemically reacted components, which affects in different ways on the individual partial voltage drops. Normally, the penetration overvoltages are increased with decreasing depolarization concentrations. The specific electrical conductivity of the electrolyte is usually lower in concentration decrease, if no conducting electrolyte can be used. A serious increase in the overvoltage occurs when the concentration of the reacting component at the electrode surface is zero due to the too low in relation to the reaction rate of the mass transfer rate between the electrolyte phase and the electrode surface and the area of the diffusion limiting current is reached. Since the diffusion limiting current of the depolarizer concentration in the electrolyte phase is proportional, there is a risk of the occurrence of these energetically unfavorable and the capacity of the cell influencing conditions at excessive concentration decrease in the cell. Since the influence of concentration in connection with the occurrence of diffusion limit currents is most clearly recognizable, the characterization of known technical solutions takes place above all from this aspect.
There are already known various types of electrolysis cells whose design was carried out especially from the point of view of accelerating the mass transport between the electrolyte and the electrode surface. Two generally different directions of development become apparent, which can be deduced from the laws of mass transfer through phase interfaces (see, for example, Franke, L .; Hertwig, K. Kardos, J. and Wiesener, K .: Electrochemical Technology and Process Engineering, Chapter 3.1 , 4.2 and 4.3, Akademie-Verlag Berlin, 1984). A first direction is based on achieving high mass transfer coefficients and thus also high diffusion limit currents in cells with plate electrodes due to high flow velocities of the electrolyte along the electrode surface. This often results in the disadvantage of high pressure losses and consequently additional energy costs. In the most necessary electrical interconnection of several sub-cells, connected to a cascade circuit with respect to the electrolyte flow, there is a depletion of the reacting component, which can lead to limiting current conditions. On the other hand, a low exit concentration is desired in the interests of the highest possible conversion and the avoidance of high expenses in the separation of unreacted starting materials. In the design of series-connected sub-cell systems, therefore, compromises are required which, on the one hand, lead to high conversions but, on the other hand, to justifiable energy costs for generating necessary flow conditions with the aim of avoiding limiting currents.
High turbulences can also be achieved by conveying the electrolyte in the circuit while maintaining the cascade connection. It can be achieved by appropriate flow rates almost arbitrarily high mass transfer coefficients. The disadvantage, however, in stationary operation is that the concentration changes over the entire cell are low and thus increase the cost of product separation. With discontinuous driving, however, high sales can be achieved. However, one is then confronted with the known problems of batch operation. In any case, one has to charge additional energy costs and equipment costs for the realization of the cycle. Other possibilities for increasing the turbulence are the use of moving electrodes (rotating disks or cylinders, vibrating vibration electrodes), for which some special applications are known. High mass transfer coefficients are achieved in such cases by the disadvantageous in electrolysis cells use of mechanically moving components. A second principal possibility for increasing the cell volume-related mass transfer rate of reacting components from the electrolyte phase to the electrode surface is to provide high specific phase interfaces (electrode surfaces). These include cells with porous electrodes as well as fixed-bed and fluid-bed cells in which, compared to plate-shaped electrodes, two to three orders of magnitude higher specific phase boundary surfaces can be achieved.
However, these cells have the disadvantage that very non-uniform distributions of the current density can occur within such electrode systems and that due to the considerable expansion of particle electrodes in the third dimension compared to plate electrodes is expected to significant voltage losses in the electrode. In some relatively complex special constructions (for example Swiss-Roll-Cell, capillary gap cell - also described in the above-mentioned monograph), a large electrode area per cell volume is also realized by very small electrode spacings and a high packing density, without, however, achieving the values of the particle electrodes.
It is the object of the invention to improve the space-time yield of electrochemical reactors without increasing the specific electrical energy consumption while maintaining the simplest design principles of electrolysis cell construction and with little effort.
The invention has for its object to provide a mono- or bipolar-working, consisting of several sub-cells electrolytic cell, in which even with considerable depletion of the reacting components, the occurrence of diffusion limit currents and thus an undesirable increase in the specific electric energy consumption or a limitation of the cell capacity be avoided. In this case, reference should be made to the cell usually used with series connection of the material flows from subcell to subcell.
This object is achieved in that at least one electrolyte space (ie, cathode and / or anode compartment) of each subcell i is divided by means of an impermeable, preferably non-conductive wall in each case two partial reaction chambers A, and Bj. The partial reaction spaces are cascaded with respect to the material flows in the following order: Room A 1 , A 2 ,..., A n , B n ; B n i, ..., B1. Another essential feature of the invention is that the partial reaction spaces A] and B-, associated electrode surfaces electrically connected, preferably designed to be continuous.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the partial reaction spaces Aj and Bj are constructed according to the principle of the plate cell or equipped with particle electrodes.
In another embodiment of the invention, the size ratio of the partial reaction spaces Aj and B 1 and thus the size ratio of their associated electrode surfaces is determined by the value of the electrical current to be realized in the partial reaction chambers. As a result of the solution according to the invention, higher concentrations of the component to be reacted than in the partial reaction chambers Bj are present in the partial reaction chambers A 1 in each case. The greatest difference is between the partial reaction chambers A 1 (electrolyte inlet) and Bi (electrolyte outlet). As a result, the desired effect occurs that at this point, the sub-streams have the largest differences, since in space B 1 with the lowest concentration in the entire cell system and the diffusion limit flow most likely can be achieved while these conditions in space A 1 because of the low sales are not present. Since the concentration of the depolarizer decreases from A 1 to A n , but increases from B 1 to B n (contrary to the flow of electrolyte), in each subcell there are indeed from 1 to η decreasing but always so acting concentration differences that for the rooms A, a larger and for the rooms B; a smaller proportion of the electric current results, but the generally desired and indispensable in bipolar cell systems condition of a constant total current is given for each subcell. In this alone achieved by specific process conditions division of the current is the main advantage of the invention, because thereby avoided limiting current conditions or occur only at much smaller outlet concentrations (compared to the simple series connection of the electrolyte spaces).
The invention will be explained in more detail below using an exemplary embodiment. For this purpose, a bipolar electrolytic cell for the cathodic reduction of nitrobenzene, which is constructed according to the filter press principle, used. The accompanying drawing shows a schematic representation of the electrolytic cell according to the invention (FIG. 1), details which are not relevant to the invention (screwing of the cell system, design of the power supply lines, constructive measures for increasing the turbulence of the catholyte flow, etc.) have been omitted in the interests of clarity.
In a cell divided by an ion exchange membrane, nitrobenzene dissolved in 25% sulfuric acid is reduced to copper cathodes. Oxygen is developed on plate anodes made of lead dioxide. As anolyte 25% sulfuric acid is also used.
The inventive design of the electrolyte flow is realized in the present example for the cathode chambers, because only the cathodic reaction can proceed material transport inhibited. By contrast, the gas-developing anode reaction is characterized by comparatively high mass transfer coefficients, so that the partial cells are connected in parallel on the electrolyte side and the oxygen-laden electrolyte is drawn off at the top.
Fig. 1 shows the electrodes 1 and 2 for the power supply and discharge and the bipolar electrodes 3, which consist of an electrically conductive composite of anode and cathode. The membrane 4 separates anode and cathode space. The cathode chambers of the sub-cells 1 to 10 are divided by a dense wall 5 into two partial reaction spaces A and B, respectively. The catholyte enters the RaUmA 1 is from there in series to Ai 0 , then led to Bi 0 and further in series to Bi. In the same sequence, the concentration of nitrobenzene decreases as the component influencing the cathode potential. In a subcell so measure essential to the measure each high and low concentration are paired. The electrodes are designed to be continuous, so that the total current flowing through the cell is distributed among the partial reaction spaces in accordance with the prevailing concentration ratios.
In the application example, 10 partial cells with an electrode area of 0.5 m 2 each were assumed. The entry concentration of nitrobenzene is c ° C = 8.50 mol m ~ 3 ; the average current density is i = 100ArrT 2 . With an electrolyte flow rate of V = 2.778 · 10 -4 m 3 s -1, the mass transfer coefficient between the electrolyte phase and the electrode surface is β, in the present in the application example construction of the Katodenraumes = 7.01 10 "5 ms -1. The cell voltage is composed of the partial voltage drops within both electrolyte phases (anode and cathode space), from the voltage drop within the ion exchange membrane and the electrode potentials together, voltage drops within the electrodes are negligible in this bipolar cell.
Table 1 shows the results for the cell designed according to the solution (divided cell). The conversion of nitrobenzene is 54.8%; the total cell penetration of the bipolar cell is Uz ges = 40.03 V. The currents divided into the spaces A and B of the respective subcell lie clearly below the limiting current range.
If this variant is compared with a conventional bipolar cell comprising 10 undivided partial cells with cascade connection of the electrolyte flow, the advantage of the solution according to the invention becomes clear and can be quantified for the application example. For equal entry conditions, the results are shown in Table 2. The total cell voltage is at the same conversion with U Zge s = 42.5V by 2.47V higher than in the divided cell. In both cases there are realizable conditions in which the current densities in all sub-cells are below the limiting current density. However, it is also clear that a capacity increase by increasing the cell current is excluded in the undivided cell, because in the last part of the cell diffusion limit current is almost reached. The cell designed according to the solution according to the invention, on the other hand, offers reserve capacity, because limit currents are not approximated in any of the subcells. An increase in the average current density! = 110Am -2 with the same cell geometry and unchanged hydrodynamic conditions in the divided cell is feasible (outlet concentration of the nitrobenzene c = 3.67 moliTT 3 , U Zge s = 45.66V). For the undivided cell, a prediction in the last two sub-cells gives a diffusion limit current density that is below the required current density. The capacity increase is therefore not feasible without application of the inventive solution.
