Description
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polyether alcohols, which are mainly used in the field of polyurethane chemistry and are suitable for the production of rigid polyurethane foams.
Preferred starting substances for polyether alcohols which can be reacted to give rigid polyurethane foams are, according to the known prior art, three- or higher-functional NH, NH 2 or OH-containing substances. In addition to the amines or amino alcohols. in particular, higher-functional alcohols, sugar alcohols or saccharides such as glycerol, trimethylolpropane, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, sucrose, starch or cellulose. For the implementation of solid or high-melting substances as an essential prerequisite for a reaction start and a continuous alkylene oxide polymer to ensure homogeneity in the liquid phase of the starter mixture or the respective reaction mixture, since the catalytic activity can only develop when the alkylene oxide by means Solution transport to the active hydrogen centers comes and the occurring high heat of reaction is sufficiently removed only by intensive heat exchange. Poorly stirrable mixtures of sugar alcohols or Sncchariden, the basic catalyst and the metered alkylene oxide portions lead at the reaction temperatures of 80 ° C to 120 c C strong side reactions, caramelization and thus high quality losses. To avoid these disorders when using solid sugar alcohols or saccharides, there are a number of known methods, in particular, the use of certain excipients is used. In order to dissolve sugar alcohols or saccharides in relation to homogenization, inert solvents such as toluene, hexane or dimethyl sulfoxide are used, for example, according to DE-AS 1493395 and DE-PS 1545020. Since the solubility of certain solid starter substances in these solvents is sometimes very poor, it is necessary to work with a large excess of solvent, which then has to be removed in complicated separation operations, thus leading to considerable solvent losses and thus to additional capacity losses.
According to DE-AS 1176358, DE-PS 1196870, DE-AS 1210554 and DE-OS 2549449 is also the use of functional solvents or coinitiators possible, being worked in aqueous solution or aliphatic alcohols, amines or amino alcohols, in particular diols such as ethylene glycol and Propylene glycol or triols such as glycerol or trimethylolpropane or special Propoxylierungsprodukte be added. When water is used, it is often necessary to use a large excess until solubility is reached, and in the subsequent alkoxylation uncontrollable glycols are formed in very broad molecular weight variations, which have a very detrimental effect on the polyether properties. With the addition of the other coinitiators an even greater excess is necessary because of the extremely low solubility, and thus produces a polyether mixture with a large proportion of Propoxylierungsprodukten the coinitiators, thus decisively shape the property profile of the polyether and displace the benefits of the starting substance completely; In addition, caramelisations may occur continuously along the alkoxylation with little addition of coinitiator.
The aim of the invention is to develop an economical process for the preparation of polyether alcohols based on solid OH-functional starter substances in optimum space-time yield while avoiding reaction startup difficulties and product-damaging side reactions and without solvent overrun.
Darlegung des Wesens der ErfindungExplanation of the essence of the invention
The invention has for its object to provide a process for the preparation of polyether alcohols by basic catalyzed addition of alkylene oxides to solid OH-functional starter substances while avoiding reaction start difficulties due to a Koinitiatorunterschusses and thus to develop polyether alcohols with a narrow molecular weight range.
According to the invention the object is achieved in that the composition of the starting substance mixture, the Alkylenoxidart and the amount of alkylene oxide of the first Anlagerungseinheit is selected according to the temperature difference between the Alkoxylierungstemperatur and the Schmälz- or homogenization of the starting substance mixture. The starter substance mixture is formed from fast, höhorfunktionellen OH-containing substances and conventional H-functional Koinitiatoren and mixed according to the adjusted temperature difference and in particular of the temperature difference underlying melting or homogenization point. As solid substances, certain alcohols, sugar alcohols and / or saccharides, in particular hexoses such as sorbitol, are used, and for the melting or homogenization / ungspunkteinstellung conventional H-functional Koinitiatoren such as aliphatic mono-, di- or triols such as ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, Trimothylolpropane or water in admixture with the other Koinitiatoren or added individually in minor Dosiermengen. The melting or homogenization point is determined by the starting substance, the added coinitiator, the basic catalyst used in solid or aqueous solution form and the alkylene oxide used in each case and is the only prerequisite for the solution or activation of the catalyst and especially for a solution or activation of the Alkylene oxide in the startup phase. After completion of the starter substance mixture and addition of the basic catalyst, in particular alkali metal hydroxide such as potassium hydroxide in the usual amount of 0.1% to 0.4% potassium hydroxide in finished polyether is metered according to the set temperature difference between the alkoxylation and the melting or Homogeusierungspunkt the corresponding Alkylenoxidart. At a temperature difference of 20 ° C. at an alkoxylation temperature above the melting or homogenization temperature or at a temperature difference of <20 ° C. at an alkoxylation temperature below the melting or homogenization temperature, propylene oxide or higher homologous alkylene oxide are metered in. At a temperature difference of <20 ° C. at an alkoxylation temperature above the melting or homogenization temperature or at a temperature difference of> 20 ° C. at an alkoxylation temperature below the melting or homogenization temperature, ethylene oxide is at least in an amount of from 0.1 to 0.9 mol of ethylene oxide / OH group attached to the starting mixture, or it is metered a random mixture of ethylene oxide with a higher alkylene oxide with at least 50% of ethylene oxide in the random mixture. With the metered and accumulated amount of ethylenoxide, the homogenization point is brought below a value of the temperature difference of the alkoxylation temperature and the homogenization point of 20 ° C. at an alkoxylation temperature below the homogenization temperature. These alkylene oxides of the 1st phase and optionally further alkylene oxide amounts corresponding to the cell quality are metered in continuously or in portions and intensively mixed with the respective reaction product and at the corresponding reaction temperatures in the range of 80 ° C. to 13O 0 C and elevated pressures in the range of 0, 1 MPa to 1.0MPa implemented. After completion of the alkylene oxide metering reaction is carried out at temperatures of 9O 0 C to 110 0 C for complete reaction and the crude polyether then usually purified by neutralization with acids, vacuum distillation for removal of oil and filtration to remove salt.
By combining the starting material composition with the alkylene oxide species and amount over the temperature difference between the alkoxylation temperature and the melt or homogenization point, it is surprisingly possible to fix an optimum solid-based polyether alcohol structure composition in admixture with a minimum amount of co-initiator. There are the usual reaction start difficulties, in the alkylene oxide addition to solid substances due to the potassium hydroxide-alkylene oxide insolubility, a major obstacle, avoided, and thus also the subsequent expiring 1. Alkoxylierungsphase in a large space-time yield and avoiding side reactions under structure degradation. In particular when pentoses or hexoses are used, for example sorbitol having a melting point in the range of the normal alkoxylation temperatures, the process according to the invention avoids the range of melt alkoxylation with strong degradation reactions and the usual addition of an excess of solvent, thus producing system-appropriate polyether alcohols. As usual, further alkylene oxide can be added to the optimal first alkoxylation phase; otherwise, it is not necessary to carry out customary intermediate operations such as the addition of further or other functional or inert solvents or removal of coinitiators and / or specific reaction products
