Abstract
Process and apparatus for the biological conversion of organic substances into biomass. The organic substances are introduced into a rotatable reaction container, and agitated therein with introduction of fresh air and continuous mixing for a period. Before introduction into the reaction container, the organic substances are finely comminuted and mixed in a preparation apparatus (20) with introduction of fresh air. The preparation can be associated with partial conversion of the material into biomass. The introduction and removal of the prepared material and of the biomass, respectively, into and out of, respectively, the reaction container is controlled depending on its speed of rotation and a temperature condition, which characterises the progress of the conversion reaction, in the reaction container. The preparation apparatus (20) comprises an essentially closed housing (23) with an inlet opening (21) and with a bottom (24) at the base, a mixing and comminuting device (25) in the region of the bottom, a device for introducing fresh air into the interior of the housing (23), a closable outlet opening (22) at a higher level than the bottom (24) and a conveying device (26) to transport the material between the bottom (24) and the outlet opening (22). The preparation apparatus (20) can also be used independently of the reaction container. <IMAGE>
