Definitions

  • the present invention relates generally to the changes of printing elements in printers of the single printing element type and more particularly, the reinstallation of a ribbon cartridge and the coupling and uncoupling of an element. and the selection engine to facilitate changing the print element.
  • printers are currently commercially available. The most common are the so-called "ball printing” machines and machines with a daisy-shaped printing wheel.
  • IBM 72 series and magnetic card printing systems use printers which have in both systems a carriage with a printing element that can be tilted and rotated for printing.
  • the fundamental difference between the carriages of the two systems indicated above is that in the first case, the exhaust is controlled by rack and pinion while in the second case, it is controlled by ratchet and worm.
  • the printing element used in these two printers is far enough away from the ribbon when the system is stopped so that the printing element can be changed without great difficulty and without damaging the ribbon.
  • the size of the printing element relative to the unlocking device disposed on the top of it, also makes it unnecessary to move or remove the ribbon to change the printing element.
  • a commonly used daisy-wheel print wheel printer is that used in the IBM 6240 magnetic card printing system.
  • the printer in this system has a carriage with a selection motor and a ribbon cartridge.
  • the selection motor comprises a hub on which is mounted the daisy-shaped print wheel which is rotated during printing for the selection of the characters and whose periphery is practically adjacent to the ribbon under normal conditions.
  • the ribbon cartridge and the ribbon are often placed in awkward positions when the print element needs to be changed.
  • the cartridge and the ribbon must be removed from the carriage in order to change the print element without difficulty.
  • the motor must be tilted or swiveled up to change the print element.
  • print wheel printers are known in the prior art which have a carriage carrying a daisy-shaped printing element contained in a cartridge, a ribbon cartridge and a selection motor.
  • a print wheel printer in daisy-shaped comprises a selection motor movable to and from a printing element, a pivoting ribbon cartridge, a cam and a cable connecting the selection motor to the ribbon cartridge. It also has exhaust rails parallel to the plate along which a printer carriage, carrying a motor and a cartridge holder carriage, can be positioned by a worm screw.
  • the printer carriage has adjustable eccentric rails which are arranged above and perpendicular to the exhaust rails.
  • the motor and the cartridge holder carriage are mounted independently on the eccentric rails, spring-loaded towards the plate and movable along the eccentric rails to and from the plate.
  • the cartridge carrier carries both the ribbon cartridge and the print element cartridge.
  • the printing element is contained in a cartridge from where it can be removed from below.
  • the print element cartridge is disposed in a housing at the front of the cartridge carrier.
  • the housing is arranged vertically, perpendicular to a plane passing through the exhaust rails, and adjacent to the plate.
  • the ribbon cartridge is pivotally mounted on the upper rear part of the cartridge carriage and arranged horizontally above the motor during printing.
  • the cable connecting the motor and the ribbon cartridge passes around a tab at the rear of the cartridge holder carriage and a cam at the bottom of the ribbon cartridge.
  • FIG. 1 shows a printer cart 1 to carry a selection motor and a cartridge cart.
  • the carriage 1 is mounted on the exhaust rails 2 and 3 and movable along the plate 5 via the worm screw 4.
  • the carriage 1 has mounting channels 25 and 26 which receive the rails exhaust 2 and 3.
  • the exhaust rails 2 and 3, the worm 4 and the plate 5 are arranged parallel to each other.
  • An eccentric rail 6 is mounted on the carriage 1 and forms an integral part thereof.
  • Another eccentric rail (not shown) is arranged on the opposite side of the carriage 1.
  • the eccentric rails have the function of carrying a selection motor 7 and a carriage 10 on which are mounted a ribbon cartridge and an element cartridge d 'impression.
  • the eccentric rails are parallel, arranged above and perpendicular to the exhaust rails 2 and 3.
  • the motor 7 and the carriage 10 are movable along the eccentric rails to and from the plate 5.
  • the front of the carriage 10 has a vertical housing 11 for the printing element to receive the cartridge for the printing element 8.
  • the housing 11 is perpendicular to a plane passing through the rails 2 and 3.
  • the cartridge 8 has a solidarity paperweight screen 9.
  • Motor shaft 12 selection 7 comprises a drive hub 13 which urges a daisy-shaped print wheel when it is engaged in the cartridge 8 during printing.
  • the drive hub 13 is movable through a cutout 14 formed in the rear wall 15 of the housing 11 during the translation of the motor 7.
  • the cutouts 18 and 19 receive a rod 49 ( Figure 2) which carries a ribbon cartridge mechanism 20.
  • the functions of the cutouts 18 and 19 and the rod 49 will be described later.
  • the ribbon cartridge device 20 is constituted by the housing itself 27 of the ribbon reel and by a plate 28 carrying said housing 27.
  • the motor 7 and the carriage 10 are returned towards the plate 5 and downwards by the motor springs 29 and 30 and by the carriage springs 31 and 32.
  • the eccentric rails 6 have a front end 33 of relatively small diameter.
  • the rear end 47 ( Figure 2) of the rail 6 is also of reduced diameter.
  • the ends 33 and 47 have a common axis of rotation which is offset from the axis of rotation of the rest of the rail 6.
  • the end 33 is arranged in a "V" groove 34 of the carriage 1.
  • a similar "V” groove 35 is arranged in 1 opposite side of the carriage 1 and receives the end of another eccentric rail.
  • the carriage 10 has several mounting supports such as the supports 36 and 37.
  • the mounting support 36 has a recess with upper surface 38 and angular surfaces 39 and 40.
  • the surfaces 39 and 40 are separated by an interval such that they are always in contact with the eccentric rail 6.
  • the mounting support 37 also has a recess with upper surface 41 and angular surfaces 42 and 43.
  • the interval separating the angular surfaces 42 and 43 of the support 37 is more important than that separating the angular surfaces 39 and 40 from the support 36. This allows the rotation of the eccentric rails which remain in contact with the angular surfaces 39 and 40 and the upper surface 41.
  • the carriage 10 has mounting supports similar to the supports 36 and 37 under its rear side 21.
  • the motor 7 comprises a front housing 44 having mounting supports with recesses similar to those of the mounting supports 36 and 37.
  • the motor 7 also includes a rear housing 45 similar to the housing 44.
  • the motor 7 and the carriage 10 are oriented relative to the plate 5.
  • the orientation can be determined by the inclination on the side of the carriage 10 according to different angles of rotation of the eccentric rails.
  • the orientation can also be vertical according to the same angles of rotation of the eccentric rails.
  • the rear side 21 of the carriage 10 has a tongue 22.
  • a thread 24 is provided under the tongue 22 of the carriage and is aligned with the hole 23 drilled in the carriage 1.
  • the screw 46 freely passing through the hole 23 of the carriage 1 is screwed into the internal thread 24 of the carriage 10 and ensures the positioning of the carriage on the eccentric rails relative to the carriage 1.
  • Cylindrical or detent elements are disposed in the recesses 18 and 19 of the supports 16 and 17, such as the trigger 48 in the recess 18.
  • the trigger 48 receives the rod 49 around which pivots the ribbon cartridge mechanism 20.
  • the cartridge 20 can pivot between a horizontal position shown in solid lines and a vertical position 69 shown in dashes.
  • the cartridge 20 includes a number of guide and drive hubs such as the hubs 67 and 68.
  • An anchor screw 50 is screwed into the rear side 51 of the motor 7 and has a cable hook 52 at its left end.
  • the hook 52 receives a retaining tip 53 integral with the cable 54.
  • the cable 54 is disposed around the tongue 22, passes through the cutout 55 in the carriage 10 and is connected to the protruding part 56 of the bottom of the ribbon cartridge mechanism 20.
  • a cam 66 is in contact with the cable 54 and is fixed to the lower left end of the cartridge mechanism 20.
  • the cam 66 and the cartridge 20 pivot around the rod 49.
  • the tongue 22 keeps the cable 54 taut and disengaged from the cam 66 when the cartridge 20 is in the horizontal position. When the latter is pivoted in a vertical position, the cable 54 is partially wound around the cam 66.
  • the ribbon contained therein is disposed behind the clipboard screen 9 and in the printing position. Arranged thus, the ribbon and the cartridge 20 are in an awkward position for a change of the printing element, for the maintenance of the printer, etc.
  • a lock is actuated 100 which can be a flexible L-shaped blade fixed to the motor housing 7.
  • a striking hammer mounting support 59 is provided to the right of the latch 100 and is connected to the front housing 63 of the motor 7.
  • the cable 54 is wound around the cam 66 which causes the horizontal displacement to the left of the motor 7 to the position 70 shown in dashes.
  • This displacement of the motor 7 causes the displacement to the left of the drive hub 13 fixed to the shaft of the selection motor 12, at position 71 shown in dashes.
  • the anchor screw 01 50 is adjustable in the rear side 51 to adjust the position of the motor 7, when the latter is in the printing position, relative to the plate.
  • the hub 13 emerges from the daisy-shaped print wheel (not shown) housed in the cartridge 8.
  • the drive hub 13 is fixed to the end-62 of the shaft 12 and has an extension 60 which has an offset drive finger 61. It is desirable to keep the drive hub 13 in the rest position during its movement and that of the motor during the pivoting of the cartridge 20 and l 'Stop member 58 is provided for this purpose.
  • the front engine mount 44 is carried by the front engine cover 63.
  • the positioning pin 57 keeps the cartridge 8 in position in its housing 11 and connected to the front mounting support of the engine 44 and is housed in an opening 65 in the cartridge 8.
  • the cartridge 20 is tilted back to return it to its horizontal position. This allows the motor 7 to pass from its position 70 shown in dashes to its position shown in solid lines.
  • the movement of the motor 7 is provided by the springs 29 and 30.
  • the stud 57 is introduced into the opening 65 to position the cartridge 8 and lock it in this position.
