  • ports 60 can be holes or slots of any shape and usually their total will be not less than 60 percent of the area of the bore of the muzzle 12 and no more than one hundred and sixty percent of the area of the weapon muzzle bore. The optimum might be about one hundred and thirty percent of bore area.
  • the porting pattern is not critical as long as when the body 14 is rotated right or left, ports 60 function as high speed jets to guide muzzle 12 right or left or up and down so the user can compensate for otherwise undesirable muzzle climb or swing.
  • device 14 could be constructed to incorporate a flash suppressor 40 or a like function, but usually it would seem more desirable to provide the device 14 separately from flash suppressor 40 so that either or both could be used and so that existing flash suppressors 40 can be used and will not have to be discarded when used with a weapon having a device 14 for climb and swing suppression.
  • tests showed excellent muzzle control, especially in automatic firing modes. Testing also indicated improved accuracy of weapons upon which devices 14 were installed. The tests indicated particularly outstanding accuracy for automatic firing. The tests also indicated, in the configuration shown in Figures 3 and 4, that there was drastic and important reduction in sound pressure level at the muzzle, thereby reducing the sound level to the exposed ear of the user. Further advantages of the use of the device 14 is that the air expansion room in the device leads to greater velocity of the bullet or projectile. The suppression feature reduces recoil of the weapon but that is true of other suppressors. Note that the functions have been provided with no alteration required of the basic weapon 10. If a different ammunition was used significantly more powerful, a different compensator 14 could be used. If porting were provided directly in the weapon barrel 12, as has been done in the prior art, not only would the porting not be adjustable but also sound would be louder, particularly to the user.
  • the porting 60 and its functioning can be the same as discussed above.
  • the difference in the swing and climb compensating device 114 is that sound suppression is absent. This would be an important feature for particularly the civilian market in which sound suppression would be illegal. There is no appreciable sound suppression in device 114 because there is only a minimal expansion chamber.
  • the device as shown may be formed from a single piece of metal with a rear threaded bore 116 fitting on thethreaded boss 30 of the weapon and with a forward boss 118 with external threads of the same size as on muzzle boss 30 so that a device such as a flash suppressor 40 can be installed thereon.

Claims (15)

1. Dispositif compensateur destiné à être fixé à l'extrémité d'une bouche d'arme pour diminuer le mouvement de l'arme dû au couple ascensionnel et de rotation pendant le tir, comprenant un corps (14) agencé pour être fixé de façon détachable à l'extrémité d'une bouche d'arme (12), le corps (14) ayant un alésage aligné coaxialement avec l'alésage de la bouche pour permettre le passage d'un projectile ou d'un engin à travers lui, le corps ayant des orifices d'évacuation orientés vers le haut pour permettre la sortie des gaz de propulsion pour diminuer le mouvement ascensionnel du canon pendant le tir, caractérisé en ce que le corps (14) comprend encore des orifices d'évacuation (60) agencés angulairement dans les parois latérales en direction radiale par rapport à l'axe de la bouche (12) pour produire des vecteurs de force non seulement vers le haut, mais latéralement de l'axe de la bouche grâce à la réaction des gaz de propulsion évacués par ces orifices (60), et des moyens d'ajustement (32) pour tourner le corps (14) par rapport à la bouche de l'arme (12), ce qui ajuste les vecteurs de force pour compenser à la fois le mouvement dû au couplé ascensionnel et de rotation.
2. Dispositif selon la revendication 1, caractérisé en ce que plusieurs rangées parallèles de petits orifices d'évacuation (60) dans les parois latérales sont prévues dans le corps (14), ces rangées étant parallèles à l'axe (52) de la bouche (12).
3. Dispositif selon la revendication 1 ou 2, caractérisé en ce que la surface des ouvertures d'évacuation est entre 0,6 et 1,6 fois la surface de la section de l'alésage de la bouche (12) à laquelle le dispositif est destiné à être fixé.
4. Dispositif selon l'une des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que le corps (14) comporte une partie cacheflamme (40) à son extrémité avant, cette partie faisant corps avec le reste du corps (14).
5. Dispositif selon l'une des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que l'alésage du corps (14) a une section intérieure pratiquement constante de sorte qu'il n'y a pratiquement pas d'effet silencieux.
6. Dispositif selon l'une des revendications 1 à 4, caractérisé en ce que le corps (14) a des alésages de même taille (32, 34) à ses extrémités arrière et avant et que le corps est radialement agrandi en son centre pour obtenir l'effet de suppression de bruit ou effet silencieux.
7. Dispositif selon la revendication 6, caractérisé en ce que le corps (14) comprend un manchon cylindrique à paroi mince (16) et des bouchons alésés avant et arrière (18, 20) fixés aux extrémités avant et arrière du manchon.
8. Dispositif selon la revendication 7, caractérisé en ce que le bouchon avant (18) a un prolongement central interne (22) vers l'arrière autour de l'alésage de ce bouchon avant (18), ce qui crée un espace annulaire autour de ce prolongement pour l'expansion des gaz.
9. Dispositif selon l'une des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que les moyens d'adjustement (32) comportent un filetage intérieur dans le corps (14) pour coopérer avec un filetage extérieur sur un prolongement (30) de la bouche.
10. Dispositif selon l'une des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que des moyens de blocage (34) sont agencés pour bloquer les moyens d'adjustement (32) dans la position ajustée.
11. Dispositif selon la revendication 10, caractérisé en ce qu'une vis de blocage (34) est prévue pour être en prise avec le prolongement (30) de la bouche pour bloquer le corps (14) à la bouche.
12. Dispositif selon la revendication 9, caractérisé en ce que le corps (14) a un prolongement (44) à son extrémité avant avec un filetage extérieur correspondant au filetage intérieur (32) à son autre extrémité de sorte qu'un objet comme un cacheflamme (40), placé à l'origine sur le prolongement (30) de la bouche, peut être placé sur le prolongement (44) de ce corps lorsqu'il est remplacé sur cette bouche par le corps (14).
13. Dispositif selon la revendication 12, caractérisé en ce que le corps (14) est agencé pour un effet silencieux et dans lequel plusieurs corps (14) sont placés sur la bouche avec le prolongement fileté (44) de chaque corps arrière en prise dans l'alésage fileté (32) du corps (14) en avant de lui, de façon à accumuler les effets silencieux de ces corps.
14. Dispositif selon la revendication 2, caractérisé en ce que les orifices d'évacuation sont agencés en trois rangées longitudinales, deux rangées plus longues agencées de façon à ce que les rangées les plus extérieures ont la même longueur et la rangée centrale agencée plus courte que les deux rangées extérieures.
15. Dispositif selon l'une des revendications précédentes en combinaison avec une arme ayant une bouche (12) et un cacheflamme (40), caractérisé en ce que la bouche (12) possède un prolongement (30) avec un filetage extérieur et des moyens d'ajustement (32) placés à l'arrière du corps (14) ayant un filetage intérieur (32) correspondant, de sorte que le corps (14) est fixé de façon détachable à l'extrémité de la bouche et que les moyens d'ajustement permettant une rotation variable du corps par rapport à la bouche, le cache-flamme (40) ayant un alésage arrière fileté (42), qui était à l'origine placé sur le prolongement (30) à l'extrémité de la bouche et une extrémité avant du corps (14) ayant un prolongement (44) avec un filetage extérieur sur lui et le cache-flamme étant placé sur le filetage extérieur de ce prolongement (44) du corps.
