Definitions

  • the invention relates to a process for working up used developers which have been used for the development of photographic materials with at least one silver halide emulsion layer.
  • the substances consumed or dragged out when processing photographic materials in these baths must be added back to the used developer.
  • the used substances e.g. developer substance
  • the bromide and iodide ions released during the development of the photographic material must be removed from the developer. If the developer were processed several times, the bromide and iodide ion concentration would otherwise increase continuously and render the developer unusable.
  • the invention was based on the object of specifying a process for processing the developer in which bromide and iodide ions can be largely removed without undesired accumulation of other constituents in the processed developer.
  • the anion exchanger contains OH groups as exchangeable groups.
  • Strongly basic exchangers are preferably used as anion exchangers, in particular those based on polystyrene, polystyrene / divinylbenzene or polyacrylate.
  • the interchangeable groups consist predominantly or entirely of OH groups.
  • At least 90% of the exchangeable groups are OH groups.
  • adsorbents such as.
  • B. adsorption resins, activated carbon, superficially modified activated carbon and bleaching earth, the regenerability and ability to bromide and iodide ion exchange of the anion exchanger used to remove bromide and iodide ions ensure if the used color developer only through the adsorbent and then only through the anion exchanger or through a Mixture of ion exchanger and adsorbent is passed. It can be seen that the developer substances are retained to different degrees by the various adsorbents.
  • Suitable adsorbents are adsorption resins of the phenol formaldehyde, polystyrene / divinylbenzene or polyacrylate type with hydroxyl groups, alkylated amino groups or quaternized ammonium groups as functional groups.
  • a cation exchanger can be used, which removes any heavy metal ions from the solution in the used color developer.
  • the developer can be worked up in various ways.
  • the developer overflow resulting from the processing of the photographic material by adding refreshing chemicals can be collected and, from top to bottom, first by the anion exchanger and then by the adsorbent, or first by the adsorbent and then by the anion exchanger, or by a mixture of the two, or can only be passed through the anion exchanger.
  • the continuous, used developer can then be collected and mixed with the refreshing chemicals, the so-called "rejuvenator” (English: “regenerator”), and used as a regenerator (English: "replenisher”).
  • the anion exchanger to be used according to the invention is exhausted. It can then be regenerated. However, it is also possible to do without regeneration and to use fresh anion exchangers in each case.
  • the use of fresh ion exchanger has the advantage that fresh ion exchanger is more active than refurbished ion exchanger. Furthermore, the effort, in particular the mechanical effort, for the regeneration of the ion exchanger is eliminated.
  • the usual developer components can also be contained, e.g. B. antioxidants, limescale, antifoggants, buffers, competitive couplers etc.
  • a commercially available color photographic multilayer material with a carrier made of PE-laminated paper is exposed imagewise and subjected to the following processing:
  • the regeneration rate for the developer was 325 ml / m 2 of the recording material.
  • the developer overflow had the composition given in Table 1. 40 l of the overflow were worked up according to the invention by treatment with
  • the overflow After passing through the ion exchanger and the adsorbent, the overflow had the composition given in Table 1 in the middle column.
  • Example 1 The material specified in Example 1 is processed as indicated there.
  • the resulting overflow had the composition specified there. It was purified in the same way, with the difference that the ion exchanger used contained, as exchangeable groups, CI ions and not OH groups.
  • the overflow cleaned in this way had the following composition per liter:
  • Example 1 In order to produce a ready-to-use regenerator as in Example 1, additional potassium hydroxide is required per liter in addition to the substances listed in Example 1.
