An der Oberseite des Abkühl- und Verbindungselements sind pilzartige Vor­sprünge angeformt, die von der einströmenden Stahlschmelze umgossen werden. Vor der Lösung der gestellten Aufgabe stand die Erkenntnis, daß der Gußbandanfang und das Abkühl- und Verbindungselement entgegengesetzten Temperaturverläufen unterliegen. Das kalt in die Kokille eingeführte Abkühl- und Verbindungselement wird durch die Stahlschmelze und den erstarrenden Bandanfang kontinuierlich erwärmt und dehnt sich infolgedessen aus. Dem­ gegenüber wird der Bandanfang nach seiner Erstarrung durch die Kokillenwände und außerhalb der Kokille durch Kühl­wasserbeaufschlagung weiter abgekühlt und versucht zu schrumpfen. daß das Abkühl- und Verbindungselement (9a, 9b, 9c) zwischen mindestens zwei Vorsprüngen (13) durch Schrumpf­fugen (18) unterteilt ist, die gegen die Schmelze abge­dichtet sind.
