Definitions

  • the invention relates to a refractory, gas-permeable sink for a vessel for holding molten metal with at least one measuring probe for indicating the residual stone thickness, the tip of the measuring probe being arranged at a preselected distance from the cold stone end.
  • the gas purging stones can either contain a refractory stone body of high porosity, in which case the gas passage takes place through the open pores between the refractory grains, or they contain a little or non-porous refractory stone body in which slots or channels are formed through which the gas passage takes place . In the latter case, one speaks of gas purging stones with directed porosity.
  • the gas purging stones are generally subject to more rapid wear than the refractory lining that follows on the side.
  • efforts are often made to approximate the lifespan of the gas purging stones to that of the surrounding lining by selecting a particularly wear-resistant refractory material, in many cases it is more economical to accept a single or repeated replacement of the purging stones during a furnace trip of the refractory lining.
  • the sink consists of at least two refractory bodies with different light-emitting capacities, which preferably merge are nested and have separation levels at a certain stone height. If the wear reaches one of these levels, this should be recognizable from the change in the brightness pattern of the light emitted by the hot surface.
  • such optical methods are not very reliable, since a bare sink surface is required for exact observation, but this is usually not available.
  • the sink is provided with electrical conductors which are combined to form a framework of longitudinal conductors and cross conductors which are staggered in height.

  • the sink can instead be provided with thermocouples, which extend to different riser heights and can be connected to an electrical display device.
  • the object of the invention is to provide a gas purging plug with a residual strength indicator, which is triggered in a simple and reliable manner by the molten metal even under the harsh operating conditions in practice.
  • the measuring probe comprises a tube and a wire that is movable and biased by a spring, the wire at the tip of the measuring probe is connected to the tube by a detachable connection due to the action of heat or contact with the molten metal and is provided with an optical display device in the part of the measuring probe projecting over the cold stone end.
  • the detachable connection at the tip of the measuring probe can preferably be a soldering or welding point, but it can also be formed by a split pin.
  • the optical display device can be formed by a flag attached to the wire, which projects outwards through a slot in the tube of the measuring probe, or it can be formed by a plate arranged outside the tube and connected to the wire.
