Abstract

In a road surfacing for areas able to bear traffic, principally in the region of filling stations, directly below the road surface (3), for example of composite paving stones (4), there is an impervious course (2) of a mixture of clay minerals, for example montmorillonite, and other mineral substances. This mixture is made up of fractions of different grain sizes in such a way that the volume of the finer grain size is in each case greater than the pore volume of the respectively coarser grain size and the greatest grain of the finer grain size is equal to or less than about 1/10 of the smallest grain of the coarser grain size. The mixture is laid in the dry, cohesionless state and, once the paving stones (4) have been put in place, is compacted by vibrating the latter by means of a surface vibrator. During this process, the finer grains respectively fill the pore spaces of the coarser grain size; excess fines rise upwards and fill from the bottom the joints (6) between the individual components (4). The moisture required for the effectiveness of the mixture as an impervious course is supplied after laying. <IMAGE>
