Although not described, the ribs of knitted fabric are actually transferred to the needles by a mechanism whereby the ribs are pre-loaded from a running-on system. The problem is to mechanize this operation.
  • the invention provides mechanism for transferring individual pieces of rib knitted fabric from a running-on bar, which mechanism comprises a rod for engaging the fabric, means for rotating the rod to pull a piece of fabric towards a rib transfer bar of a straight bar knitting machine, gauge-separated elements mounted on an intermediate bar, and means for rotating the intermediate bar to move the elements between the points of the running-on bar and push the fabric piece onto points of a rib transfer bar.
  • the mechanism may be statically mounted on or near the machine, preferably on a carriage, or at a station to feed bars onto a conveyor as in GB 1195698 above.
  • the rod for engaging the fabric is preferably provided with hooks for temporarily securing the rib fabric piece and may comprise a strip of nylon fabric having hooked threads. After pulling the rib towards the rib transfer bar, the rod may be detached by a further pivotal movement, or by an advance and rotational movement.
  • the invention also provides mechanism for transferring individual pieces of rib knitted fabric from a rib transfer bar to the frame needles of a straight bar knitting machine, which mechanism comprises a pair of arms supporting the rib transfer bar, the arms being pivoted with respect to the machine for moving the rib transfer bar between an inoperative position for receiving a piece of rib knitted fabric from a running-on bar and a delivery position where the fabric piece can be moved onto the frame needles.
  • This mechanism can be synchronized to be fed by a mechanism as above from a running-on bar, or may be fed by a push-along conveyor containing a running- on bar with ribs, these ribs being transferred manually onto the rib transfer bars.
  • the mechanism can be part of the fashioning mechanism or a mechanism separate from the fashioning mechanism but having the same motion.
  • All movements can be implemented from a microprocessor or similar programmer from component locations sensed optically or mechanically to synchronize with the pneumatics or power source of the knitting machine.
  • the fabric pieces can be loaded from the running-on bar to the rib transfer bar in its inoperative position while the machine is at a plain or pattern knitting phase of its cycle. Then the lace or marking fingers are raised to an out of action position, and the fashioning fingers are moved laterally out of action beyond the full width of the fashioning bar under central control. This repositioning gives the rib transfer bar a clear path to swing down and locate in the space previously occupied by the lace, marking or fashioning fingers.
  • a piece of rib knitted fabric is delivered from the rib transfer bar to the frame needles at a predetermined time during the re-set sequence by movement of the fashioning mechanism. After delivery, the transfer bar is automatically raised to its inoperative position, ready to receive another rib at some time during the knitting cycle. The lace, marking and fashioning fingers re-assume their operational positions.
  • Each of the mechanisms of the invention may be sold separately as a retrofit for a straight bar knitting machine or as part of a complete machine.

  • a rib transfer arm 50 is shown in two positions pivoted about a shaft 52. There are in fact two such rib transfer arms 50 supporting a rib transfer bar 55 shown in an inoperative position to the right for receiving a piece of knitted rib fabric, but omitted for the sake of clarity in a delivery position of the rib transfer arm 50 where the fabric piece can be moved onto the frame needles 10.
  • FIG. 1 To the right of Figure 1, there are shown a number of pieces 54 of rib knitted fabric on a running on bar 56 clamped in position at 58 on a carriage 60 whereby they may be moved from head to head along rails 62 which are engaged through wheels 64.
  • a rib transfer point 32 is also shown projecting from the rib transfer bar 55, in this position aligned with a point 66 of the running-on bar 56.
  • Above these points is a rod 68 for engaging a leading individual piece 54 of rib knitted fabric.
  • the rod 68 is provided with hooks (not shown) of nylon thread for temporarily securing the rib piece 54.
  • the rod 68 is integral with arms 70 whereby it can be rotated pneumatically about a shaft 72.
  • the rod 68 is rotated anticlockwise to engage the first rib piece 54, and then clockwise to pull the piece 54 towards the rib transfer points 32.
  • a further pivotal movement of the rod 68 detaches the piece 54.
  • Gauge-separated elements 74 mounted on an intermediate or lift shaft 76 are then moved by axial rotation of the intermediate bar 76 between the running- on point 66 and the rod 68.
  • the separate elements are moved against the force of a return spring 78 between stops on the arms of a U-shaped bracket 80 on an advance shaft 82 which itself is retained against axial movement with respect to the carriage 60 by a spring 84 secured to its base.
  • the elements 74 push the rib piece 54 onto the rib transfer bar 55, where it remains until the end of a knitting cycle.
  • the lace, marking and fashioning fingers are moved out of action, and the rib transfer bar 55 is carried by the rib transfer arms 50 in a swinging movement down to a delivery position where the rib piece 54 can be moved onto the frame needles 10 at the start of another knitting cycle.
