Definitions

  • the invention relates to a process for the continuous casting of a thin strip or a thin slab, in particular made of steel in a thickness between 2 and 20 mm, by pouring a melt into a continuous mold supporting the strand by means of mold broad side walls on the two broad sides, the strand while reducing its thickness as a result of broad side walls converging in the direction of flow, the continuous mold is moved through the continuous mold, and a device for carrying out the method.
  • the invention aims to avoid these disadvantages and difficulties and has as its object to provide a method of the type described above and an apparatus for carrying out the method, which enable proper support and guidance of the narrow sides of the strand.
  • leakage of the melt due to a leak in the continuous mold as well as sticking of the still thin strand shell and thus tearing it open should be reliably prevented.
  • This object is achieved in a method of the type described in the introduction in that between the mold broad side walls endless and deformable transverse to their longitudinal direction and forming the narrow sides of the strand or the mold sealing strip continuously in the longitudinal direction of the strand at a speed corresponding to the pulling speed of the strand be introduced that the melt solidifies on the sealing strips, the sealing strips come in tight contact with the mold broad side walls and are arched in the transverse direction when the strand is moved in the pull-out direction in accordance with the reduction in thickness of the strand.
  • the sealing strips come into contact with both broad sides of the okille passage and each form a bridge between the broad sides and thus prevent the liquid steel from escaping from the side. They enable the formation of a strand shell and do not prevent the shell from running out of the casting gap, because the sealing strips deform in the same way as the strand shell that forms on them.
  • a process for continuous casting is known from AT-B 283 614, in which the melt is poured into a space which is formed from a number of steel strips which move downwards in the vertical direction in synchronism with the t * pull-out speed of the strand.
  • the steel strips are inseparably connected to one another at their longitudinal edges to form a housing which is closed in cross section.
  • the housing thus formed itself becomes the outer skin of the steel strand, which completely encloses the strand.
  • This method is not only very complex due to the sheet metal requirement, but also complicated, since a complete sealing of the housing on its longitudinal edges is difficult to achieve.
