- the invention relates to a method for processing plastic, wherein the plastic is distributed without pressure over the lower mold half of a mold divided in a horizontal plane, then the mold is closed and, after the mold has been closed, pressed into a partial area of the mold, whereby after closing the mold, the mold cavity is initially completely filled with melt.
- Injection molding usually works with pressures in the order of 50-100 bar, which are far below the usual injection pressure in the order of 350 bar, although the viscosity of the plastic is deliberately chosen to be high.
- transfer molding it is not important to distribute the plastic as smoothly as possible, but it is important to essentially maintain the distribution of the plastic that was achieved before the mold was closed. In this sense, a low temperature of the melt and a considerable proportion of the plastic in long-fiber reinforcing materials is not a disadvantage.
- the invention is based on the surprising finding that, even under the process conditions of transfer molding, it is possible first to fill the mold completely and then to displace part of the melt into a secondary cavity by means of a fluid.
- the invention leads to a completely unexpected result, in particular when it comes to producing a large-area object which has an insert on the inside or on the surface and which is provided with reinforcing ribs. It is now possible to surround the insert with a first plastic and then to displace this plastic from the area of the ribs and in particular to replace it with a plastic reinforced by glass fibers.
- a two-stage process is therefore proposed for the first time, in which an insert is back-pressed in the open form in a first process step and back-injected in the closed form in a second process step.
- the underlying consideration is that after the initial pressing in of the insert, it is already protected against wrinkling to such an extent that the gentle pressing process can be dispensed with and the second plastic can be injected under the usual pressure of 50-350 bar. This pressure can be maintained during the cooling of the molded part, which, in contrast to the pressureless cooling during injection molding, prevents the molded part from shrinking.
- the back-press technology can be used economically, especially for large molded parts.
- a melt cake is inserted into a fully opened, vertical tool by a horizontally arranged movable injection unit 1 by means of a slot die 5 filed.
- the plastic 16 can also be fed through the tool by means of a line 15.
- the shaping is carried out and the connection with the decorative material is established. Due to the good pre-distribution, the melt only has to overcome short flow paths during the back-pressing process, which takes place by closing the tool halves 3, 4 by means of the clamping unit 2. Therefore, only low melt pressures are required to shape the molded part geometry.
- the special feature of the method according to the invention is that it is used to produce moldings which have thickened portions 13 in the form of ribs or the like. For this purpose, more plastic is first applied to that area of the lower mold half 3, which is later to form the rib 13, than in the edge areas. As a result, when the mold, which is provided with a dipping edge 8, is closed, there is only slight movement of the melt relative to the textile insert 9. A fluid 7 is injected through a nozzle 7 into that part of the mold cavity 6 which later forms the rib 13 should. Since the mold cavity 6 is initially completely filled with melt, part of the melt is displaced by the gas into a secondary cavity 10. This secondary cavity 10 can be locked by a locking mechanism 12.
- the fluid fed through the nozzle 7 is not a gas but a plastic which gives the rib 13 increased strength, for example because this plastic is mixed with glass fibers.
- a plastic would be less suitable for the first process step, but its local use is unproblematic.
