Definitions
- Carbon blacks with suitable size, surface area and structure for use in PTC compositions are well-known. Guidelines for selecting such carbon blacks are found in U.S Patent Nos. 4,237,441 (van Konynenburg et al.) and 4,388,607 (Toy et al.). In general, carbon blacks with a relatively large particle size, D (measured in nanometers), e.g. greater than 18 nm, and relatively high structure, e.g. greater than about 70 cc/100 g, are preferred for PTC compositions.

- an ink was prepared by blending the designated percent by weight (of solids) of the appropriate carbon black with dimethyl formamide in a high shear mixer. The solution was then filtered and powdered KynarTM 9301 (a terpolymer of vinylidene fluoride, hexafluoropropylene, and tetrafluoroethylene with a melting point of about 88°C, available from Pennwalt) in an amount equal to (100 - % carbon black) was added to the filtrate and allowed to dissolve over a period of 24 to 72 hours. (Approximately 60% solvent and 40% solids was used in making the ink).

- fibers were prepared by blending 55% by weight ElvaxTM 250 (ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer with a melting point of 60°C, available from Dow) and 45% by weight RavenTM 22 (carbon black with a pH of 7.0, a particle size of 62 nm, a surface area of 25 m 2 /g, and a DBP of 113 cc/100 g, available from Columbian Chemicals).
- An ink was prepared by dissolving the fibers in xylene. After 813 hours at 52°C, the R n value was 0.94.
- Fibers were prepared from 76% by weight PFATM 340 (a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and a perfluorovinyl ether with a T m of 307°C, available from du Pont) and 24% by weight RavenTM 600 (carbon black with a pH of 8.3, particle size of 65 nm, DBP of 82 cc/100g, and surface area of 34 m 2 /g, available from Columbian Chemicals) as in Example 15. Samples tested at 311°C for 50 hours had an R n of 0.55.

Claims (8)
- Dispositif électrique qui comprend :(I)(A) un élément à coefficient de température positif comprenant une composition polymère conductrice présentant un comportement à coefficient de température positif, et comprenant :(a) au moins un polymère organique ayant une cristallinité d'au moins 15 % ; et(b) au moins 4 % en masse de la composition d'un noir de carbone ayant un PH de moins de 4,0 ;
et dans lequel la totalité du ou des polymères organiques dans la composition polymère conductrice présente une cristallinité totale d'au moins 5 % et un point de fusion Tm ; et(B) deux électrodes qui peuvent être connectées à une source de courant électrique pour faire passer le courant dans l'élément à coefficient de température positif ;(II) a une résistance Ri à 20°C ; et(III)est tel que, s'il est maintenu à Tm pendant 50 heures, puis refroidi à 20°C, il présente une résistance à 20°C de 0,25 Ri à 1,75 Ri ;
caractérisé en ce que(IV) le dispositif électrique est un dispositif de protection de circuit ;(V) la composition polymère conductrice a une résistivité de 0,1 à 100 ohm-cm ;(VI) l'élément à coefficient de température positif est un élément laminaire ; et(VII)les électrodes sont des électrodes en tôle métallique ou en peinture conductrice fixées sur l'élément à coefficient de température positif. - Dispositif électrique selon la revendication 1, caractérisé en ce que le noir de carbone ayant un pH de moins de 4,0 est la seule charge conductrice dans la composition polymère conductrice.
- Dispositif électrique selon la revendication 1 ou 2, caractérisé en ce que le noir de carbone a un pH de moins de 3,0.
- Dispositif électrique selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que le polymère conducteur comprend une encre polymère pour film épais.
- Dispositif électrique selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que le polymère conducteur a été réticulé.
- Dispositif électrique selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que la composition comprend en outre (i) du noir de carbone ayant un pH qui est d'au moins 5,0 ou (ii) du graphite.
- Dispositif électrique selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que le polymère est un fluoropolymère.
- Dispositif électrique selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que le noir de carbone a une taille de particules de D nanomètres et une résistivité à sec RCB telle que (RCB/D) soit inférieur ou égal à 0,1.
