Definitions
- the technical field of the invention is that of ammunition allowing the destruction of highly protected targets by a wall for example of concrete.
- the body piercing this ammunition has a massive insert that is embedded in the body material.
- This insert is made of a dense and mechanically resistant alloy chosen for example from refractory materials and their alloys (tungsten, tantalum, uranium).
- the body material is formed of steel that is cast around the insert.
- This ammunition has the disadvantage of being complex to manufacture. It is first of all delicate and expensive to produce a dense core of large diameter (greater than 90 mm) and having high mechanical characteristics in a reproducible manner (density greater than 13, yield strength greater than 1000 mega pascals). Indeed, these materials are used in the form of powders by compression techniques.
- the patent WO-87/07708 discloses a piercing projectile comprising an envelope and a core of heavy material. This projectile is completed by a cap of light material (plastic or aluminum) empty or filled with incendiary material. No insert is provided in the cap and therefore no special provision is provided.
- the patent FR-2771496 describes a conventional projectile comprising a heavy body of tungsten with an element before aluminum desiccator transmitting the projectile a solicitation of impact. No insert is provided in this element before and no precision is made relative to its density relative to the body.
- the munition according to the invention is of simplified manufacture.
- the munition according to the invention makes it possible to ensure the perforation of a concrete target regardless of the angle of impact on the target.
- the subject of the invention is a perforating munition comprising a penetration body delimiting an internal cavity closed by a base, the penetration body comprising a front tip comprising at least one insert integral with the tip, said insert being disposed in a housing opening out of the body, characterized in that the inserts are shaped in segments arranged radially around an axial extension of the body, said segments being secured to the body by a connecting means, said body being made of a material having an elastic limit greater than or equal to 1200 Mega Pascals and said insert being made of a material with high mechanical characteristics, denser than that of the body.
- the connecting means may comprise at least one ring surrounding the inserts.
- This perforating munition may also include a dense alloy nose disposed at the end of the axial extension of the body and having a rear surface bearing on the segments.
- each insert may be constituted by a substantially cylindrical bar housed in a bore of the penetration body.
- the perforating munition may thus also include an axial insert having a front tip extending the penetration body.
- This munition may then comprise a charge of propellant powder for ejecting the insert out of the penetration body.
- the invention also relates to a perforating munition comprising a penetration body delimiting an internal cavity closed by a base, the penetration body comprising a front tip comprising inserts integral with the tip, said inserts being arranged in a housing opening to the outside of the body, characterized in that the inserts are shaped in at least one ring of bars regularly arranged around an axis of the penetration body, said bars being arranged radially around an axial extension of the body, said bars being secured to the body by a connecting means, said body being made of a material having a yield strength greater than or equal to 1200 Mega Pascals and said insert being made of a material with high mechanical characteristics, denser than that of the body.
- the ammunition can thus comprise two crowns of bars regularly arranged around an axis of the penetration body.
- the ends of the bars may instead be projecting outside the penetration body.
- Each bar may have its axis inclined relative to the axis of the penetration body.
- the ends of the bars of a crown and another ring and / or an axial bar may be substantially in the same plane.
- the internal cavity may contain at least one explosive charge.
- a perforating munition 1 according to one embodiment of the invention comprises a penetration body 2 which delimits an internal cavity 3 closed by a base 4.
- This ammunition could be an air / ground bomb or a missile or a military missile head. It will have a diameter greater than 100 mm and a length of the order of 1.5 m.
- it may include a rear portion (not shown) incorporating a thruster which will confer a range or a given speed.
- the internal cavity 3 contains an explosive charge 5 which can be initiated by a fuse 6 disposed in the vicinity of the base 4.
- the fuze will be designed to ensure the detection of the crossing of a wall and then to initiate the explosive charge once this wall crossed.
- Such rockets are well known to those skilled in the art. For example, one can refer to the patent US5255608 which describes such a rocket.
- the penetration body 2 comprises a front tip 2a which is extended by a rear cylindrical portion 2b delimiting the internal cavity 3.
- This body is made of a material with high mechanical characteristics, that is to say a material whose elastic limit is greater than or equal to 1200 Mega Pascals.
- a material with high mechanical characteristics that is to say a material whose elastic limit is greater than or equal to 1200 Mega Pascals.
- 35NCD16 steel may be used.
- the front tip 2a comprises inserts 7 made of a denser material than that of the body 2.
- inserts 7 are made of a dense material with high mechanical characteristics.
- a material with a density greater than or equal to 17 and having a yield strength greater than or equal to 1000 mega pascals will be chosen.
- the inserts 7 are here shaped in segments arranged radially around an axial cylindrical axial extension 8 of the body 2.
- each segment is in contact with the body 2, on the one hand at the axial extension 8 and on the other hand with a shoulder 9 of the body 2.
- the free space surrounding the axial extension 8 thus constitutes a housing for the inserts.
- Each insert 7 is also in contact with two other neighboring inserts.
- the set of inserts thus forms the ogivated part of the front tip 2a of the penetration body 2.
- the inserts 7 are made integral with the body by a connecting means which comprises at least one ring 10 surrounding the inserts 7. This ring will be made of steel. It will be housed in a groove 11 formed by the juxtaposition of notches carried by each insert.
- the munition 1 also comprises a nose 12 which is also made of a dense alloy. This nose is fixed to an end 14 of smaller diameter carried by the axial extension 8 of the body 2.
- the nose 12 has a rear surface 13 resting on the inserts 7.
- the nose 12 is fixed on the end 14 for example by threading. It makes it possible to transmit to the various inserts 7 the shock during the impact on a target.
- the munition according to the invention combines a large diameter warhead (greater than 90 mm) and a large perforating capacity with a steel body whose sole function is to ensure the carrying of the explosive charge and the maintenance of perforating inserts.
- the inserts 7 have reasonable dimensions (section of the order of 2000 mm 2 to 6000 mm 2 ) which allows their manufacture according to the sintering techniques already used for the artillery arrows projectiles.
- Figure 2 shows a piercing ammunition 1.
- This piercing ammunition differs from the previous one only by the structure of the front tip 2a.
- the front tip 2a here comprises an axial bore 15 inside which is positioned an insert 7 having the shape of a substantially cylindrical bar and made of a material denser than that of the body 2.
- the front tip 16 of this insert has an ogive shape that extends the penetration body 2.
- This insert 7 will thus have a diameter of the order of 30 to 40 mm for a penetration body 2 of diameter 90 mm. Its manufacture is thus facilitated.
- the implementation of a tungsten alloy with high mechanical characteristics makes it possible to confer on this point a perforating character and not mere ballast. This improves the perforation capabilities of the ammunition for a given mass.
- the ammunition shown in FIG. 3 also comprises a single insert 7 made of dense material disposed in an axial bore 15.
- This insert 7 has an internal cavity 17 inside which is disposed a charge of propellant powder 18.
- a device 19 for igniting this charge is housed in the body 2. It is connected by a wire connection 20 to the rocket 6.
- the latter will then include a chronometric module or a proximity detection module (connected to an antenna not shown integral with the body's warhead 2) which will trigger the ignition of the propellant charge 18 before the impact on a target and at a distance from it of the order of 3 to 4 calibers.
- a chronometric module or a proximity detection module connected to an antenna not shown integral with the body's warhead 2 which will trigger the ignition of the propellant charge 18 before the impact on a target and at a distance from it of the order of 3 to 4 calibers.
- the propellant charge 18 will ensure the ejection of the insert 7 out of the penetration body 2. It will therefore be propelled towards the target.
- the speed differential between insert 7 and the body 2 will be of the order of 200 m / s. Such an arrangement increases the perforation capabilities of the munition without increasing its speed.
- the insert will ensure the drilling of a pre-hole in the target, the penetration body will then impact the target at this pre-hole.
- Figures 4a, 4b and 4c show another embodiment of a perforating munition according to the invention.
- This mode differs from the previous ones only in the structure of the piercing head 2a which here comprises several bars 7a, 7b, 7c set in bores arranged in the body of the tip 2a.
- Each bar 7a, 7b, 7c is cylindrical and the axis of its bore is parallel to the axis 21 of the piercing head 2a.
- the bars 7a and 7b are thus distributed in two concentric rings surrounding the axis 21 of the perforating head.
- a bar 7c also occupies a coaxial bore to the head 2a (see also Figure 4c).
- first ring or middle ring comprising eight bars 7b regularly distributed around the axis 21 and a second ring or outer ring comprising sixteen bars 7a regularly distributed about the axis 21.
- the diameters of the peripheral bars 7a are here lower than those of the middle bars 7b.
- the diameters of the different bars may be identical or different for reasons of organization of the perforating head. The goal is to obtain the highest overall density for the piercing head.
- the diameters of the bars may be between 10 mm and 30 mm.
- the bars are still made of a dense material, for example a tungsten alloy obtained by sintering. Because of the reduced diameter for the bars, we can here to adopt a material with even higher mechanical characteristics, for example a tungsten alloy whose elastic limit will be greater than or equal to 1500 Mega Pascals.
- the body of the heads 2a is made of steel.
- This embodiment makes it possible to easily obtain a front tip 2a having a high density. It is indeed easier to make dense bars of reduced diameter (of the order of 10 to 30 mm) than to achieve a large diameter front tip (greater than 150 mm) of such a sintered material.
- FIGS. 5a and 5b show another embodiment which differs from the previous one only in the shape of the bars 7.
- each bar therefore has a point 22 which extends outside the outer surface ogivée of the front tip 2a.
- the axes of the bars 7a, 7b and 7c are again all parallel to the axis 21 of the ammunition.
- FIGS. 6a and 6b show another embodiment similar to that of FIGS. 5a and 5b but in which each bar 7a or 7b has its axis 23a or 23b inclined with respect to the axis 21 of the penetration body 2.
- the bars 7a of the outer ring have an axis 23a which is inclined at an angle ⁇ of the order of 20 ° to 30 °.
- the bars 7b of the middle ring have an axis 23b which is inclined by an angle ⁇ of the order of 10 ° to 15 °.
- This arrangement also makes it possible to favor the attachment of the front tip 2a on the target during an impact with an incidence.
- this embodiment makes it possible to increase the attachment capacities without increasing the masses or the diameters of the bars 7.
- FIG. 7a shows another embodiment similar to that of FIGS. 5a and 5b but in which the bars 7b of the middle ring have a length such that their tip 22 is substantially at the point 22 of the axial bar 7c (therefore at the level of the same plane 24).
- Such an embodiment makes it possible to ensure simultaneous embrittlement of the target at several points of impact. This improves the perforation.
- FIG. 7b represents an embodiment similar to that of FIG. 7a but in which all the bars have a length such that their point 22 is substantially at the point 22 of the axial bar 7c (therefore at the same plane 24 ).
- the explosive charge 5 with a load of a different nature, for example a incendiary charge or one or more explosive and / or incendiary sub-munitions ejected after perforation of the target.
