Definitions

  • the invention relates to a sealing system for an electrical connector and, more particularly, to a multi-pin electrical connector.
  • This sealing system is intended, in particular, to ensure the tightness of the connector around the electrical connection son, at the back of the connector, that is to say in an area of the connector where the electrical son are not not introduced into the connection pins.
  • the invention has applications in the field of electrical or electronic connections and, in particular, in the field of electrical connection for the automobile.
  • the multi-pin electrical connectors are used in many technical fields. These multi-spindle connectors are designed to receive a plurality of connection pins, male or female, in each of which is crimped an electrical connection wire.
  • the multi-pin electrical connectors comprise a plastic body having a plurality of housings each intended to receive a connection pin. Inside the plastic body is housed a grommet type seal, crossed by several connection son which each end in one of the various connection pins.
  • This grommet type seal more simply called grommet, is generally provided with channels into which the connection wires are introduced. There is, generally, a channel of the grommet in the extension of each housing of the plastic body of the connector, this channel being located at the back of the connector.
  • the role of the grommet is to seal the connector by preventing moisture or dust from entering the connector from behind the connector.
  • each connection pin crimped around a lead wire is inserted into a housing of the plastic body and the lead wire is inserted into the grommet channel.
  • the connection pins are housed in the front part of the connector and the electrical wires in the rear part of the connector.
  • the introduction pins in the front of the connector is from the back of the connector.
  • the connection pins must cross the grommet channels to find themselves in their homes.
  • the pins often have a square section and not a round section like electrical wires.
  • the grommet channels have a round section, it is difficult to pass the pins through the channels.
  • the channels of the grommet have a square section, then the sealing at the level of the electric wires is no longer ensured by the grommet.
  • This sealing device relates to a connector 1 provided with a grommet 2 made of an elastic material and provided with channels 3, or through holes, allowing the passage of the pins 4 and the connection son 5.
  • the channels 3 are provided with lips 6 allowing the passage of the pins equipped with their connection son and closing on these son, when the pins are passed, to ensure a seal at the son.
  • This device has two types of lips: peripheral lips that provide a peripheral seal against the walls of the rear portion of the connector and the inner lips that seal near the connection pins.
  • Such a device correctly ensures the sealing of the connector at the passage of the connection son, when the section of the connection son is of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pins.
  • the section of the connection wires is significantly smaller than the section of the connection pins and, more specifically, when it is not of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pins, then the passage of said pins the connection of the lips grommet channels which, after their passage, can not tighten sufficiently the connection son to ensure sufficient sealing. This is particularly the case when the ratio between the section of a connection pin and the section of the connection wire is greater than 2.
  • the invention proposes a sealing system for a multi-spindle electrical connector comprising, on the one hand, a grommet-type multi-spindle joint and, on the other hand, a unitary seal placed around the connection wire and housed in the inside the multi-spindle joint, when the connecting wire has a section that is not of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pin.
  • the unitary seal comprises, on at least a part of its length, sealing lips coming in pressure against the channel of the multi-spindle joint; the channel comprises, on at least a part of its length, sealing lips coming in pressure against the connection wire.
  • Each housing 7a, 7b, 7c, etc. can receive a pin connection similar to pin 4 or a different connection pin as, for example, a male connection pin.
  • These connection pins are each crimped around an electrical connection wire which may have a small diameter section, an order of magnitude smaller than the section of the connection pin, as is the case for the connection wire 5 Crimped into the connecting pin 4.
  • these connection pins can also be crimped each around a wire having a section of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connecting pin.
  • the sealing system of the connector 1 comprises, on the one hand, a multi-spindle joint 10 of the grommet type, also called grommet, and, on the other hand, one or more unitary joints 20.
  • the multi-spindle joint 10 comprises several channels 11 each traversed by a connection wire 5. More specifically, the multipin joint 10 comprises a channel located at the rear of the connector, at the end of each housing 7a, 7b, 7c, ... of the connector. Thus, each channel is crossed by the connection wire which ends in the connection pin housed in the housing located in the extension of the channel in question.
  • the unitary gasket 20, of tubular shape surrounds the connection wire 5, over part of its length, in the case where the connection wire is of small section.
  • the unitary seal 20, made of a flexible material, is inserted into a channel of the multi-spindle joint 10.
  • the sealing system of the invention comprises as many unitary joints as there are electrical wires having a small section. relative to the section of the connection pin in which it is crimped.
  • Each channel 11 of the multipin joint 10 has two parts, namely a front portion 11a and a rear portion 11b.
  • the front part 11a is the part closest to the connection pin; it has a Sa section, smooth.
  • the rear part 11b is the part closest to the back of the connector; it has a section Sb.
  • the front portion 11a is intended to receive the unitary seal 20.
  • the rear portion 11b is intended to receive the connection wire 5.
  • the two sections Sa and Sb therefore preferably have different dimensions adapted to the section of the element they receive.
  • the rear section Sb comprises external sealing lips 12. These sealing lips 12 are intended to come into pressure against the electrical connection wire 5 in order to prevent the penetration of moisture or dust into the connector, along of this thread 5.
  • the unitary seal 20 comprises internal sealing lips 21 intended to come into pressure against the smooth section Sa of the front part of the channel 11.
  • these sealing lips 21 seal in the multi-spindle joint , at the level of the unitary joint.
  • the unitary seal 20 may also comprise a smooth section, not visible in this figure because inserted in the rear portion 4c of the connection pin 4. Indeed, the unitary seal 20 surrounds the connection wire 5 on its part close to the pin connection. It can also surround the wire 5 in the zone that is introduced into the rear part 4c of the connection pin 4. In this way, the reception of the wire 5 by the connection pin is stiffened, this facilitates the introduction of the pin into the connector 1. It is understood that the unitary seal surrounds the connection wire, in an area where the connection wire is not stripped.
  • the seal in the connector 1 is ensured by the pressure of the external lips 12 of the multi-spindle seal 10 on the connection wire 5 and / or by the pressure of the internal lips 21 of the seal unit 20 on the walls of the channel 11 of the multipin joint 10.
  • the internal lips 21 of the unitary seal 20 seal the connector.
  • connection wire 5 has a section greater than that of the figure 2 , that is to say a section of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pin 4.
  • the connection wire 5 has a section smaller than 1mm 2 while in the case of the figure 3 it has a section greater than 1mm 2 .
  • the connecting wire 5 since the connecting wire 5 has a section of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pin 4, it is not useful to use a unitary seal 20. Indeed, since the wire 5 has a section which is close to that of the connecting pin 4, the passage of the pin in the channel 11 does not risk to deteriorate the quality of the pressure of the outer lips 12 on the wire 5. The outer lips 12 thus ensure good sealing of the connector.
  • connection wire has a section close to that of the connection pin, it is the multi-pin seal which seals the connector by the existence of its sealing lips 12.
  • connection wire is of smaller section than that of the connection pin, then it is the unitary gasket 20 surrounding the connection wire which seals the connector via its sealing lips. 21.
  • the figure 4 represents the unitary seal 20 surrounding a connection wire 5 and introduced into a connection pin 4.
  • the connection pin has been shown seen from the rear, thus showing its rear part 4c which serves as a reception for the unitary seal 20.
  • This figure also shows the section smooth 22 of the unitary seal 20, that is to say the section which has no sealing lip. This section 22 can be introduced into the spindle 4 or simply abut against the receiving portion 4c of the spindle.
  • the rear section 23 of the unitary seal 20 comprises internal sealing lips 21, for example three in number.
  • the section 22 of the unitary seal may have a dimension greater than that of section 23, excluding sealing lips.
  • Such a unitary seal 20 has the advantage of increasing the section of the connection wire 5, when this is reduced. A pressure between the multi-spindle joint and the connection wire can thus take place, through the unitary seal which then ensures the seal in the connector.
  • This multi-spindle joint 10 is made of an elastic and impermeable material. It comprises a plurality of channels that can have different shapes and dimensions.
  • the channels may have a round section such as channel 11 described above or square like channels 13 and 14.
  • the shapes and dimensions of the channels depend on the types of pins and wires used for the connections to be made.
  • the multi-spindle joint of the invention can be made in two plates 10a and 10b positioned one on the other so that their channels are in agreement.
  • the figure 6 represents a top view in section of a connector comprising the sealing system of the invention.
  • This figure 6 shows the channel 11 of the multi-spindle seal 10 in section with, inside the connection wire 5 surrounded by the unitary seal 20.
  • the smooth section 22 of the unitary seal is inserted in the receiving portion 4c of the pin 4 and the section to lip 21 is housed in the front portion 11a of channel 11. It is seen, on this figure 6 , that the smooth section 22 of the unitary seal is not in contact with the walls of the channel 11.
  • This section 22 only serves to facilitate the insertion and maintenance of the connection wire 5 in the connection pin 4.
  • By against the lips 21 of the unitary seal 20 have a section greater than the section of the channel 11 of the multi-spindle joint, which explains that the lips 21 are in constant pressure against the walls of the channel, thus sealing in the connector.
  • the rear portion 11b of the channel 11 does not have sealing lips.
  • only a wire of small section connection, surrounded by a unitary seal 20 can be housed in the channel 11.
  • connection wire of small section and provided with a unitary joint, or a connection wire of greater section without a unitary joint.
