the present invention relates to an ironing board comprising a plate slidably mounted on a frame and relates more particularly to an ironing board comprising a plate that can occupy a working position in which a longitudinal end of the plate is disposed laterally to a rest -iron.
an object of the present invention is to overcome this disadvantage by providing an ironing board, provided with a large tray and an iron rest at one of its ends, which can be easily brought into a storage position in which the size of the tray and the iron rest is reduced to facilitate storage of the ironing board.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an ironing board which is simple and economical to implement and which provides good ergonomics of use.
the subject of the invention is an ironing board comprising a plate slidably mounted on a frame, the plate being able to occupy a working position in which a longitudinal end of the plate is disposed laterally to an iron rest, characterized in that that the tray can slide to a storage position in which a portion of the tray is disposed under or on the iron rest to reduce the bulk of the ironing board.

the iron rest is connected to the frame by two connecting arms between which the plate can slide.

the figure 1 represents an ironing board according to the invention comprising a frame 2 supported by a first foot 4 and a second foot 5 arranged in an X configuration, the frame 2 supporting a plate 1 and an iron rest 3 disposed in the extension of the tray 1, the iron rest 3 being intended to receive a steam generating base or an iron during the inactive ironing phases.
the frame 2 of the ironing board is symmetrical with respect to its longitudinal axis and comprises two longitudinal members 20 supporting the plate 1, these beams 20 being advantageously constituted by extruded aluminum profiles with a length of about 100 cm .
the tray 1 has a rear portion 11 foldable connected to a front portion 10 of the tray by hinges 12, shown in dashed lines on the figure 1 .
the hinges 12 are constituted by strips of fabric connecting the two upper surfaces of the front portion 10 and the rear portion 11 of the tray, or by hinges as described in FIGS. patents US 2,617,214 , US 5,329,710 or JP7116400 .
the front portions 10 and rear 11 of the plate 1 are, for their part, constituted by a frame 10A, 11A supporting a wire mesh, not shown in the figures, the entire plate 1 being covered with a cover.
the foldable rear portion 11 of the tray thus produced can occupy an extended position, illustrated on the figure 1 , in which the rear portion 11 rests on the longitudinal members 20 and is in the extension of the front portion 10 to form with the latter a continuous ironing surface, the rear portion 11 can also occupy a folded position in which it is folded down on the front part 10 of the board, as is illustrated on the figure 2 .
the plate 1 has a width of the order of 45 cm for a length of the order of 125 cm when the rear portion 11 is in the deployed position, and a length of the order of 100 cm when the rear portion 11 is in the folded position, the rear portion 11 foldable having a length of the order of 25 cm.
the plate 1 is slidably mounted on the frame 2 so as to slide from a working position illustrated on the figure 1 , in which the entire plate 1 is located laterally to the iron rest 3, at a storage position illustrated on the figure 3 , in which a part of the plate 1 is placed under the iron rest 3.
the iron rest 3 is fixed to the rear end of the longitudinal members 20 of the frame being slightly raised relative to the plate 1 so that the rear end of the front portion 10 the tray, covered with the rear portion 11 in the folded position, can be inserted under the iron rest 3 as is illustrated on the figure 3 .
the iron rest 3 is, for example, constituted by three crosspieces 30 spaced from one another and interconnected by two longitudinal bars 31, the rear end of the iron rest 3 being fixed to the rear end rails 20 by means of a transverse plate 32 against which the plate 1 abuts when in the storage position.
the front end of the iron rest 3 is advantageously supported by two connecting arms 33 connecting the lateral edges of the iron rest 3 to the longitudinal members 20, the spacing of the two connecting arms 33 being adapted to allow the sliding of the plate 1 under the iron rest 3.
the foldable rear portion 11 of the tray preferably comprises a lower face provided with a locking device for immobilizing the tray 1 in the storage position.
This locking device is for example constituted by a metal blade 13 comprising a locking head 13A resiliently engaging under a transverse bar 34 disposed at the front of the iron rest 3 to prevent sliding of the plate 1 forwards .
the plate 1 thus locked can be easily released by the user by exerting a manual pressure on the metal blade 13 in order to deform the latter so that the locking head 13A escapes from the transverse bar 34.
the front portion 10 of the plate is slidably mounted on the frame 2 by means of rollers 14 supported by a front transverse bar 15 and a rear transverse bar 16 located under the plate 1, these rolls 14 engaging in guide rails 21 carried by the longitudinal members 20.
Each guide rail 21 is advantageously constituted by a U-shaped profile, disposed on an outer lateral face of the spar 20, in which is rolled one of the rollers 14 carried by the transverse bars before 15 and rear 16, the plate 1 being slidable freely on a stroke of the order of 50 cm between the working position, wherein the front crossbar 15 is at the front end of the guide rails 21, and the storage position, in which the rear crossbar 16 is at the rear end of the guide rails 21.
first leg 4 and the second leg 5 are connected to each other by a pivot connection 50 located at an intermediate point of their length, the first leg 4 comprising two parts connected to each other by a pivot axis 42 disposed on the foot portion extending between the pivot connection 50 and the lower end of the first leg 4.
the first leg 4 comprises an upper part constituted by a rigid connecting tube 40 and a lower part consisting of two substantially parallel rigid tubes 41.
the two tubes 41 are connected to the lower end of the connecting tube 40 by the pivot axis 42 and the upper end of the connecting tube 40 is pivotally mounted on the frame 2 by means of an axis 40A located substantially at one third of the length of the frame 2 starting from the rear end of the frame 2.
the pivot axis 42 is distant of the order of 13 cm from the upper end of the two tubes 41 so that the latter comprise a segment 41A extending above the pivot axis 42, the two tubes 41 being made integral with each other by spacers 43, one of the spacers 43 being disposed at the upper end of the two tubes 41 and abutting against the connecting tube 40 when the tubes 41 are aligned with the connecting tube 40.
the second foot 5 is advantageously constituted by two generally parallel rigid tubes 51, the two tubes 51 being interconnected by a spacer 52 located at a small distance from their lower end.
the two tubes 51 comprise an upper end secured to a rod 53 slidably mounted in guide rails 22 arranged on the inner lateral face of the longitudinal members 20, the longitudinal positioning of the rod 53 along the guide rails 22, and consequently the height of the plate 1 of the ironing board, being controlled by means of a handle 23 connected to a latch 23A interlocking with a rack 53A integral with the rod 53.
the two tubes 41 and the two tubes 51 diverge slightly at their lower end coming to rest on the ground to increase the lateral stability of the ironing board.
the two tubes 51 of the second leg support a guide rail 54 disposed near their upper end in which is slidable an axis, not visible in the figures, secured to the upper end of the two tubes 41 of the first foot so that the feet 4, 5 are folded according to the advantageous kinematics, illustrated on the Figures 5 to 6 , to obtain a reduced footprint of the legs in the folded position.
the ironing board thus produced has the advantage of being particularly compact when the tray is in the storage position and the feet are folded in accordance with the Figures 6 and 7 , which allows the user to store more easily the ironing board in a closet, to facilitate its transport during its purchase, but also to reduce the cost of transporting the ironing board during its journey, by truck, train or boat, from the production area to sales areas.
the ironing board thus produced also has the advantage of being very easily deployed or folded and to provide a great comfort of use when the ironing board is in the working position illustrated on the drawing. figure 1 , by offering a plateau and iron rest of important surface.
the iron rest can be carried by the frame being disposed slightly below the level of the tray so that the tray slides above the iron rest when is in storage position.
the ironing board and its frame may be mounted on legs having a different folding kinematics.
the plate of the ironing board may include several foldable parts.
