- the containers arranged in respective seats shaped by a nest, which is inserted in a transport receptacle, are transported to the filling station.
- the filling station is provided with a first handling assembly, arranged to extract one container at a time from the nest, transport it to a dispenser to carry out the filling and, then, transport it to a transfer device.
- Patent application EP 2457550 illustrates an example of an apparatus for the preparation and transport of pharmaceutical products which requires a controlled working environment.
- the apparatus includes a cell that defines a process chamber inside, in which product preparation operations are carried out, equipped with a product handling system. An aseptic environment is created in the chamber to avoid product contamination.
- a problem complained of in the sector relates to the management of cytotoxic powdered materials, which are present, for example, in the pharmaceutical sector.
- a further need is to ensure that the components of the apparatus are not contaminated by the cytotoxic powdered material as this would cause damage with the consequent need for replacement thereof.
- Said systems are not suitable for handling powdered materials that require a controlled working environment, for example materials for application in the pharmaceutical field, since they do not prevent any contaminants present inside the machine, for example the handling assembly, from coming out into the work environment where the materials are treated.
- the aim of the present invention is that of solving the aforementioned problems, devising an apparatus which allows the filling of containers with a cytotoxic powder material, guaranteeing optimal safety for the operators.
- a further object of the present invention is to minimize the risk of contamination of the components of the apparatus by the cytotoxic material, thus preserving their integrity.
- a still further object is to provide an apparatus which guarantees to keep the sterility of the process in an optimal way.
- a further object of the present invention is to devise an apparatus which allows a precise measuring of the powdered material, in particular in the case of use of a powdered material which has chemical and/or physical characteristics which make it difficult to work.
- a further object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for filling containers with a powdered material that is versatile and configurable according to the properties of the material to be treated.
- a further object is to provide an apparatus which maximizes the consumption of the powdered material.
- Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus that is capable of handling containers in safe and reliable way.
- Still another object is to provide an apparatus which allows the number of discarded containers to be reduced to a minimum at each production cycle.
- Still another object is to provide an apparatus of simple constructive and functional conception, having reliable operation, versatile use, and relatively unexpensive cost.
- the apparatus for filling containers with a powdered material comprises a feeding station arranged for feeding a plurality of said containers; a filling station, arranged downstream of said feeding station, comprising a measuring assembly configured to fill each said container with a measured quantity of a powdered material; at least one handling assembly movable for transporting at least one said container from one station to a following station.
- said apparatus comprises a capping station arranged downstream of said filling station.
- said at least one handling assembly is made by a robotic arm.
- said handling assembly comprises a series of segments associated by means of joints, said joints comprising pressurized seals.
- the apparatus comprises a pneumatic circuit which connects each seal of said at least one handling assembly to a source of positive pressure, said pneumatic circuit being configured to pressurize and depressurize each seal of said at least one handling assembly, wherein each pressurized seal defines a bidirectional protective barrier which prevents that any contaminants comes out into the environment external to said at least one handling assembly and that the contaminants penetrate into said at least one handling assembly.
- each said seal internally defines a region that is isolated from the external environment. This region delimited by the seal is closed so as to prevent communication between the inside of the handling assembly and the external environment. It should be noted that the external environment is the work environment in which the operating stations are located and in which, therefore, the powdered material is present.
- each said seal in said pressurized configuration, creates said bidirectional protective barrier, that is it prevents that the contaminants penetrate into the handling assembly and that the contaminants go outside from the handling assembly to the external environment.
- This feature makes it possible to ensure that the contaminants present in the handling assembly cannot come out into the external environment, and this is particularly relevant in the case where powdered materials for the pharmaceutical sector, which require a sterile working environment, are treated.
- the handling assembly is protected. It is noted that, if cytotoxic powdered materials are used, the possible entry of such materials into the handling assembly involves, in addition to damage to the handling assembly, an impossibility of intervention by the operators due to the cytotoxicity of the materials.

In this way it is ensured that the integrity of the mechanical components inside the proportional pressure control valve is maintained.
- said safety valve receives an incoming fluid at its inlet at a first pressure P1 and is piloted by a second pressure P0, said second pressure P0 being the pressure of said fluid which is conducted by a source of the compressed fluid entering said circuit.
- said first pressure P1 is a pressure of said fluid leaving a pressure regulator arranged upstream of said safety valve.

- the joints of the robotic arm 9 are equipped with pressurized seals. More specifically, the apparatus includes a pneumatic circuit 50 to pressurize and depressurize the seals of each robotic arm 9.
- Figure 9 shows a diagram of the pneumatic circuit 50 for pressurizing and depressurizing a seal of a robotic arm 9. The circuit 50 allows setting the pressure of a fluid in the seal of the robotic arm 9 at a value within a range selected by the operator and, in general, allows checking the state of the seal.
- Each seal of the robotic arm 9 internally defines a region that is isolated from the external environment in order to prevent this external environment from communicating with the inside of the robotic arm 9 and vice versa.
- Each seal therefore creates, in the pressurized configuration, a bidirectional protection barrier that performs the function of avoiding contamination in both directions, that is of the arm from the external environment and the external environment due to contaminants present inside the robotic arm.
- External environment means the work environment in which the operating stations are located.

- the maximum limit value is the maximum pressure value accepted at the inlet by the proportional pressure control valve 51.
- the safety valve 53 receives incoming compressed air at a pressure P1 and is piloted by a pressure P0.

- the pressure P0 is 6-8 bar while the pressure P1 is a value lower than P0.
- the pressure P1 has a value lower than said maximum limit value of the incoming pressure of the proportional pressure regulating valve 51.
- a second conduction means 56 of compressed air connected to the compressed air source 54, gives rise to two branches: a first branch 56a enters the pressure regulator 55 while a second branch 56b, to which corresponds the pressure P0, is a pilot signal for the safety valve 53.

- the pressure sensor 58 detects the pressure value in the seal and sends an alarm signal to the control unit if the measured value is outside the pressure range set by the operator. In the event that it is necessary to perform maintenance on the seal, it can be depressurized by means of the control valve 57, by switching the control valve 57 and discharging all the pressurized air in the seal. In addition, any pressure loss or overpressure in the seal can be detected by reading the pressure sensor 58.

- Each covering member 80 is provided with seal means, not visible in the figures, interposed between the covering member 80 and the base to isolate the member 80 from the base and prevent contamination, in case of breakage of the covering member 80.
- seal means not visible in the figures, interposed between the covering member 80 and the base to isolate the member 80 from the base and prevent contamination, in case of breakage of the covering member 80.
- the covering members 80 are arranged around the shaft 26 associated with the feeding receptacle 18 and around the stem 21 of the measuring assembly 15, as can be seen, for example, in Figure 4.
- covering members 80 can be used in further stations of the apparatus, for example in the crimp capping station 44.
- the covering members 80 are movable, that is, they shorten and lengthen according to the movement of the member on which they are mounted and the pressure of the fluid inside them is regulated by means of the relative pneumatic control circuit 100.
- the pneumatic control circuit 100 relating to a covering member 80 comprises a source of a pressurized fluid 101 , preferably compressed air, connected to a first conduction means 102 and to a second conduction means 103 which enter a valve selection 104.
- the selection valve 104 is controlled to allow the passage of compressed air that passes through the first conduction means 102 or to allow the creation of a vacuum by exploiting the Venturi effect.
- This selection valve 104 is connected to a covering member 80.
- the control circuit 100 comprises, upstream of the selection valve 104, a pressure regulator 105 which regulates the pressure of the fluid which derives from the source of the compressed fluid and is led to the selection valve 104 by the first conduction means 102.
- the control circuit 100 makes it possible to perform, in addition to the aforementioned regulation, also a check on the integrity of the covering element 80, which must be performed at the beginning of each production cycle.
- the circuit 100 includes a pressure gauge 106 which may control, following the introduction of a fluid at a predetermined pressure, the pressure change after a predetermined time interval.
- the characteristic of being able to insert a pressurized fluid or to suck the fluid from the covering member 80 makes it possible to adapt the behavior of the covering member 80 to the variation of the parameters of the mobile member on which it is mounted, for example on the basis of the variation of its stroke. In this way, the covering member 80 is more rugged and this confers approval to the apparatus as the mechanical components are protected.
- sealing means makes it possible to avoid, as already mentioned, possible contamination of the base and, therefore, ensures the safety of the operators.
- the apparatus achieves the purpose of filling but also closing the containers with a cytotoxic powdered material, guaranteeing optimal safety for the operators first of all thanks to the fact of providing handling assemblies for handling the containers equipped with pressurized seals controlled by a pneumatic circuit.
- the apparatus includes a pneumatic circuit that makes it possible to pressurize and depressurize the seals of each handling assembly that create respective bi-directional protection barriers.
- each seal defines an internal region isolated from the outside and which is pressurized in a controlled way by the pneumatic circuit have the effect of ensuring that the relative handling assembly is not contaminated and that, at the same time, the work environment is not contaminated.
- a prerogative of the invention is that the control unit, in cooperation with the pressure sensor, regulates the pressure in each seal, through the pneumatic circuit, in a dynamic way.
- the pressure value in each seal is regulated according to the working conditions and this dynamic adjustment allows for the optimal exploitation of each handling assembly with a benefit on the reliability of the operations carried out by the handling assemblies.
- control valve which receives the incoming fluid outgoing from a relative seal and is connected, at the outlet, to a pressure sensor, is switchable to control the discharge of the pressurized fluid from the seal, therefore if operators need to carry out maintenance operations, it guarantees adequate safety for operators.
- covering members associated with relative pneumatic circuits for controlling the pressure of the fluid within them gives strength to the apparatus, as it protects the parts on which they are mounted from any contamination by the cytotoxic powdered material.
- the adjustment of the pressure of the fluid entering the covering element makes it possible to ensure that a limit value beyond which the integrity of the covering element is compromised is not exceeded. In this way the occurrence of the contamination of the working environment due to the breakage of the covering member is avoided. Therefore, the covering elements contribute to maintain the sterility of the region protected by the insulator, in which the operating stations are located.
- An advantage is linked to the provision of an insulator that surrounds the operating stations, preventing contamination between the external environment and the operating region, as well as to the provision of a control unit that generates a vertical laminar airflow inside the insulator. These characteristics are relevant in sectors that require accurate environmental control during the process, such as, for example, the pharmaceutical sector, for preserving the sterility of the containers and the product, as well as for ensuring the safety of operators, especially in the case of use of cytotoxic products.
- the configuration of the measuring assembly comprising a support device, which leads the measuring members alternatively to collect the material and to carry out the filling, and, in particular, the fact that the measuring members have a compact configuration and reduced size, minimizes the interaction with the vertical laminar air flow and, therefore, minimizes the occurrence of turbulence phenomena. In this way the measuring assembly helps to ensure that the sterility level of the process is maintained.
- the apparatus according to the present invention achieves the purpose of effectively filling the containers with a powdered material thanks to the fact that the pressure of the fluid entering the calibration chamber of each measuring device and, equally, the negative pressure can be adjusted to create the vacuum in the chamber, independently from the other measuring members.
- the independent pressure regulation is useful for solving problems of incorrect measuring that can occur due to the characteristics of the material, for example due to the fact that it has a significant adhesiveness.
- An advantageous aspect of the present apparatus is the fact that the piston of each measuring member can be translated inside the relative casing for discharging the powder material, in combination with the insertion of the supplied fluid into the calibration chamber from the pneumatic circuit or as an alternative to the fluid.
- the compression exerted by the measuring member on the layer of the powders material can be combined with the suction due to the vacuum condition created in the calibration chamber.
- a further advantage offered by the apparatus according to the present invention is to maximize the consumption of the powdered material thanks to the provision of a rotating feeding receptacle equipped with at least one material collection cavity.
- the material collection cavity in fact allows the recovery inside it at least a part of the powdered material which remains in the containment body of the feed receptacle when the material present in the discharge container ends, or when the material of the batch runs out.
- the fact that the measuring members collect the material from the collection cavity, in the recovery phase, has the effect of significantly reducing, for each batch of material used, the quantity of powdered material that is not used for filling the containers. Optimizing the consumption of powdered material leads to a reduction in production costs.
- An aspect to underline is that the use of robotic arms to move the containers achieves an efficient transport of the containers and also allows the minimization of the number of containers rejected at each production cycle. If the sensors present in the capping and crimp capping stations do not respectively detect the presence of a cap or a crimp cap on a container, the control unit commands the movement of the robotic arms in order to recover the cap or crimp cap and apply them again on that container.
- the robotic arms allow the change of their trajectory according to different needs and, therefore, allow the aforementioned recovery functions. This means that it is possible to reduce the number of containers to be rejected.
- the robotic arms for handling the containers make it possible to maintain a level of cleanliness at the end of the process that is better than the use of handling systems such as, for example, belts, augers, etc.
- the apparatus described for illustrative purpose only, is subject to numerous changes and variations according to different needs.
