Definitions
- LED lighting devices are particularly popular in the automotive industry. When supplying power to LEDs, however, it should be noted that their forward voltages take on different values depending on the operating temperature. For example, the forward voltage of an LED emitting red light is around 1.5 volts to 1.6 volts when warm or hot, while it can have a value of around 2.2 volts when cold. The forward voltage, which decreases by around 0.6 volts during operation, must therefore be compensated for in the voltage supply of the LED and its power source, which are connected in series.
- the LED lighting device can be provided with a second LED with a forward voltage whose temperature dependence is different from that of the forward voltage of the first LED and/or whose operating temperature is different from that of the first LED, a second current source assigned to the second LED, wherein the second LED and the current source assigned to it are connected in series and this series connection is parallel to the series connection of the first LED and the first current source assigned to it, and a switching device between the two series connections and the voltage control unit for selectively connecting one of the two series connections to the voltage control unit, wherein the voltage control unit can adjust the size of the output voltage depending on the parameter representing the temperature of the LED of the series connection connected to the voltage control unit via the switching device and the voltage control unit outputs the output voltage compensating for a temperature-dependent change in the forward voltage of said LED.

- the voltage control unit is designed as a DC/DC converter. This converter is then supplied with the parameter representing the current operating temperature of the LED of the respective channel, corresponding to the currently "activated" LED channel, so that the voltage compensation by the voltage control unit delivers the "right" output voltage for the respective channel.
- the voltage control unit can therefore be designed both as a DC/DC converter and as a linear voltage regulator. It is not absolutely necessary to have several voltage control units, for example one for each LED channel.
