Abstract
Process for the preparation of higher aliphatic alcohols, characterized by starting from materials containing vegetable and animal oils and fats and also by a continuous series of operations, consisting first of catalytically treating the fats, under pressure and at elevated temperatures, by an aliphatic alcohol monovalent, in excess, to thus liberate the glycerol and transform the fats into esters of the monovalent alcohol with the carboxylic acids, in subsequently separating the excess of alcohol and the glycerol, from the esters formed by this trans-esterification in catalytically treating these esters, under pressure and at elevated temperatures, by hydrogen in excess, to transform their carboxylic components into higher fatty alcohols, in separating the excess hydrogen and the recovered transesterification alcohol, and in collecting the higher fatty alcohols.
