Process for the preparation of new coumarin derivatives of the formula I ** (See formula) ** in which R1 means an alkyl, phenyl or phenyl alkyl radical which may be substituted in the phenyl nucleus by halogen atoms, R2 and R3 mean hydrogen, a halogen atom or an alkyl or lower alkoxy group, R 4 means hydrogen or a radical corresponding to the given definition for R 1, or a lower dialkylaminoalkylene group with 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkylene group, and R5 means hydrogen or a lower alkyl group which can be directly linked to an alkyl group R4, characterized by reacting compounds of the general formula II ** (See formula) ** with compounds of the general formula III ** (See formula) ** in which formulas R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 have the meaning expressed above, and, if desired, a basic radical R4 of a compound thus obtained, of the general formula I, is salified with an inorganic or organic acid.
