A method of preparing a feed composition for ruminants comprising adding to a basic feed for ruminants an unsaturated product chosen from unsaturated free fatty acids having at least 14 carbon atoms in the molecule, unsaturated animal fats hydrolyzed, the hydrolyzed vegetable oils, the alcohols derived from the unsaturated fatty acids having at least 14 carbon atoms in the molecule, the lower alkyl esters of the unsaturated fatty acids having at least 14 carbon atoms in the molecule, or a mixture of the aforementioned unsaturated compounds, the amount of said unsaturated material being sufficient to provide at least about 0.7 units of iodine number per pound (1.5 units/kg) of the composition of feed for total ruminants.
