A method for the production of an oxetane of the formula: ** (See formula) ** where A represents an oxy or an alcohol group; R1 and R2 individually represent a hydrocarbyl, halohydrocarbyl, aminohydrocarbyl, alkoxyhydrocarbyl, aminoalkylhydrocarbyl or heterocyclyl group; and R3 to R8 represent a hydrogen, halogen, hydrocarbyl, halohydrocarbyl, alkoxyhydrocarbyl, hydroxyhydrocarbyl, alkoxycarbonylhydrocarbyl, or carboxy group; with the provisos that (1) R1 and R2, together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, can represent the group: ** (See formula) ** where R3 is the same as before, and B represents sulfonyl, lower alkyl groups or lower alkyl alcoholic substituted groups; (2) R5 and R6, together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, can represent: ** (See formula) ** where R1 to R4 and R7 and R8 are the same as before; and (3) when A is methylene, R1 and R2 are not both hydrocarbylaryl; which method comprises mixing a ketone with an olefinic compound, and irradiating the resulting mixture with light energy, of a wavelength between about 2000 and about 4000 angstroms, for a period of time sufficient to produce said oxetane.
