Abstract

A composite ammunition round for firing in an open chamber breech mechanism 100, Fig. 6, comprises a jacket 200, Figs. 10 and 11, having as cross-section an equilateral curvilinear triangle with convex sides and a cartridge in the jacket comprising a case 204 for the propellant and a projectile 208, the jacket being of a material, e.g. plastics, which is yieldable under internal propellant gas pressure to seal the breech mechanism on firing and non-combustible under conditions prevailing in the breech mechanism on firing. The cartridge 204 can be surrounded by additional propellant 206. For use in recoilless weapons, the jacket is formed with side openings and the cartridge case is perforated or frangible so as to permit the escape of gas through Venturis 124 and 122, Fig. 6, of the weapon. The round is fed through the weapon by a rotatable cylinder 108 having a correspondingly shaped open firing chamber which, in the firing position, is closed by a strap.
