Abstract

A synthetic resin spinneret is made by (i) disposing a plurality of vertically extending taut synthetic filaments in a mould, (ii) pouring a thermoplastic or thermosetting synthetic resin into the mould and allowing it to set surrounding and embedding the filaments, (iii) taking the body of set resin out of the mould, and (iv) removing the filaments to leave orifices extending through the synthetic resin body. Preferably the filaments 1 are first passed tautly around and fixed to a frame structure 2, which may consist of a plurality of frame units clamped together or may be a single frame with holes to receive the filaments, and the frame structure 2 is then placed in the mould 4 which is filled with resin 5. After setting, the block of resin is removed from the mould, the frame structure 2 is cut away, the end surfaces of the block (perpendicular to the filaments) are polished, and the filaments are removed by dissolving in a solvent, by heating and melting, by applying ultrasonic vibrations, or a combination of such methods. In a modification, the frame structure 2 is separable into upper and lower parts, the filaments first being passed tautly around the frame in the mould, and resin is poured in not higher than the junction of the two parts and allowed to set first. The upper frame part is then raised to stretch the filaments above the first resin layer and the mould is filled. The resin block is then treated as above, and has orifices as shown in Fig. 3. Preferred resins are epoxy and polyester thermosetting resins, when the filaments used are nylon and polyethylene respectively, The synthetic resin spinneret has low thermal conductivity (10-3 cal. cm.-1 sec.-1 C.-1).
