Abstract
Improvements in emulsion polymerization, characterized in that polymerization is carried out by adding an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, a conjugated diolefinic monomer or mixtures thereof in the presence of an emulsifier of the formula **(See formula)** wherein R is a straight chain primary, branched chain primary, secondary or tertiary group having 5 to 20 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof R1 and R3 are hydrogen, methyl ethyl or -COOH; R2 and R4 are hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, -COOH or -CH2COOH; Y is a strongly hydrophilic group and is -CONH2, -OCH3, -OC2H5, -CH2OH or (see graph); X is Y or a less hydrophilic group and is -COOC2H4OH, -COOC3H6OH, -CONHCH2OH, -CONHC2H5, -CONHCH3, -CONHC3H7, -COOCH3, -COOC2H5, -CN, -OOCCH3, -OOCC2H5, or (see graph); a + b is from 2 to 50; and (see graph) is 0 to 1 unless X is a less hydrophilic group in which case (see graph) is less than 0.6; and Z is oxygen or nothing.
