Abstract

A procedure for epimerization of a 7α-aminocephalosporin of formula: **(See formula)** where R1 is a blocking group and R'is hydrogen, alkanoyl- (lower) oxy, carbamoyloxy, N-substituted carbamoyloxy, halogen, lower alkoxy, lower alkoxy (lower) alkoxy, benzyloxy or benzyloxy substituted, which consists of making react: (a) the above compound with an aromatic or aliphatic aldehyde or ketone, to give a compound of formula: **(See formula)** where R'and R1 are as defined above and R2 is alkyl or aryl, substituted or unsubstituted and R3 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl; (b) and reacting this latter compound with a strong base in the presence of an aprotic solvent and in the optional presence of a dipolar aprotic cosolvent, followed by addition of a molar excess of acid; (c) recovery of the compound: **(See formula)** thereby produced: (d) and reaction of the latter compound with an acid in the optional presence of an amine and recovery of the desired product thus produced.
