Abstract
A process for the production of new 5,7-disubstituted xanthone-2-carboxylic acid compounds of formula: **(See formula)** and its non-toxic and pharmaceutically acceptable esters, amides and salts; where both R1 groups are the same and are selected from lower 1-hydroxyalkyl and its lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, tetrahydrofuran-2-yl, tetrahydropyran-2-yl, tetrahydropyran-4-yl and its 4-alkoxytetrahydropyran-4-yl esters carboxylic acylics; whose procedure consists of: 1) reducing a 5,7-dialkanoyl-xanthone-2-carboxylic acid to give the corresponding 5,7-di (1-hydroxyalkyl) -xanthone-2-carboxylic acid; 2) optionally esterifying a hydroxyalkyl product from step 1) to give the corresponding acyloxyalkyl-xanthone-2-carboxylic acid; 3) optionally etherifying a hydroxyalkyl product from step 1) to give the corresponding etherified hydroalkyl-xanthone-2-carboxylic acid and 4) optionally converting a product from steps 1), 2) and 3) to its pharmaceutically acceptable, non-toxic esters, amides and salts.
