Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of sheet-like materials of a leather-like type which includes the operations consisting of: (1) preparing hollow composite fibers, each consisting of 16 to 96 segments arranged alternately of polyester or polyamide and polystyrene, which are mutually adhered to each other and which surround a hollow space, and which extend along the longitudinal axis, said hollow composite fiber having a denier of 1 to 20, and each segment having a denier of 0.001 to 0.5; (2) forming a fabric using the hollow composite fibers thus prepared; (3) separating the polystyrene segments from the hollow composite fibers with a dedicated solvent; and (4) applying an elastic polymer to the fabric.
