Abstract

Within the normal & radiation lead shield between the inner container and outer jacket, with or without interposed fire resistant/quenching sheath a number of vertical tubular elements of high thermal conductivity metal filled with neutron capture material, are so placed that they form a continuous shield to radial radiation of neutrons and help to keep the temp. of the lead from rising excessively. The elements extend at least over the length of the inner container. The whole package has end plates of both lead and neutron capture material.
