Abstract
Vanillin, acetovanillone and other oxidation products are obtained from lignosulphonic materials such as sulphite cellulose liquor and alcohol plant effluent therefrom, by heating with aqueous lime at a range of pH=12 to that of lime solution, to 120-200 DEG C. at 50-300 lbs. p.s.i. with dispersed oxygen preferably at a partial pressure of oxygen below 20 lbs. p.s.i., separating the liquid, and acidifying to free the vanillin &c. Examples of the preparation of vanillin &c. from alcohol plant effluent under various conditions of temperature, pressure and time of reaction are given, with a drawing of a suitable reactor vessel.
