Abstract
Vanillin, acetovanillone and other oxidation products as calcium derivatives are obtained from lignosulphonic materials such as sulphite cellulose liquor and alcohol plant effluent therefrom, by heating with aqueous lime at a range of pH=12-that of the saturated lime solution, to 120-200 DEG C. at 50-300 lbs. p.s.i. with dispersed oxygen at a specified partial pressure, as in Specifications 683,093 and. 683,094, but the process being carried out continuously. Apparatus for carrying out the reaction and curves showing the advantages of the continuous process are shown in drawings. The vanillin &c. are obtained by acidification of the separated liquid products. Examples of the method and tables of results are given.
