Abstract

Metal articles are formed in a lost foam casting process by forming a pattern of the article in an organic foam material and coating with a refractory and immersing the pattern in a dry sand mould, filling the mould with a molten metal and evacuating the steam and residue formed by burning the pattern with the molten metal. Allowing the casting to solidify but, before the solidified fraction exceeds 40 per cent by weight, applying an isostatic pressure within the range between 0.5 and 1.5 MPa, the pressure increasing at a rate between 0.003 and 0.3 MPa per sec dependent upon the grain size of the sand, depth of immersion and casting thickness, such that an excess pressure at the interface, having a value of between 0.002 and 0.010 MPa is reached in less than 2 secs. decreasing as the pressure increases, then maintaining a constant pressure until solidification is complete.
