Abstract

1,250,411. Moulding plasterboard. UNITED STATES GYPSUM CO. 29 Jan., 1969 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 5023/69. Heading B5A. Plasterboard which is continuously moulded by depositing an aqueous slurry of calcined gypsum, which may be a foamed slurry, on to a paper face sheet on a moving belt and then applying a back sheet on to the slurry and around which the edges of the face sheet are folded and bonded, is coated on the back sheet, after the plaster has set but before the core has dried, by a coating roll with an aqueous composition which is rendered permeable to water vapour by the removal of water therefrom whereafter the board is dried by heating thereof to drive moisture from the core through the coated paper sheet. Water may be removed from the coating by wicking into the underlying paper sheet or by evaporation, e.g. in a gas circulating oven, desirably at a temperature above 250‹ F. and preferably above 450‹ F. and, when the coating includes sand particles, permeability is increased by the pressing thereof into the paper. The coating preferably comprises a polyvinyl acetate emulsion binder, with or without an acrylic emulsion to achieve a higher viscosity, of which suitable formulations are given which include clay, with and without sand.
