Abstract

1328530 Free piston engines; reciprocating pumps A BRAUN 16 Nov 1970 [14 Nov 1969] 54481/70 Headings F1A F1B [Also in Division H2] A free piston engine comprises a synchronizer balancer assembly including a first portion 46 connected to move synchronously with the engine free piston and a second counterbalancing movable portion 62 operatively connected to the first portion for reciprocating movement in a direction opposite to that of the first movable portion, means being provided on the second portion for connection to the reciprocably movable member of an energy absorbing device 14. The energy absorbing device may be a pump, an electrical generator or a double acting compressor. In a modification two single acting oppositely directed power sections may be employed, placed one on each end of a free piston engine. The energy absorbing device or the generator positioned between the two power sections. The second counterbalancing movable portion is provided with movable members which have been designed so that they can be readily removed and replaced by movable members of different weights so that the counterbalancing weight may be varied.
