Apparatus for grinding materials and particularly plastics at low temperatures, comprises a grinder 12, a supply vessel 10 to supply material to the grinder, means including a pipe 32 to remove ground material from it and a closed circuit of ducting including a heat exchanger 2 for supply of a cold gas into the grinder and recirculation of the gas through the heat exchanger. Part of the ducting of a second closed circuit passes through the heat exchanger 2, ducting of the second closed circuit leading from the heat exchanger 2 to a second heat exchanger 3, from the second heat exchanger 3 to a compressor 4, from the compressor again to the second heat exchanger, from the second heat exchanger to an expansion chamber in the circuit and from the expansion chamber to the first heat exchanger.
