Abstract
1386094 Ketals; 4-hydroxy benzodioxoles FISONS Ltd 25 April 1972 [4 May 1971] 12869/71 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of a ketal of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are (C 1 -C 4 ) alkyl radicals; R<SP>2</SP> is a (C 1 -C 4 ) primary or secondary alkyl radical and R<SP>4</SP> is a (C 1 -C 4 ) normal alkyl radical, comprises reacting a compound of the formula wherein XH is R<SP>2</SP>, with an alkanol of the formula R<SP>4</SP>OH in the presence of, as catalyst, a strong acid ion exchange resin in the acid form. The reaction is suitably carried in an inert solvent for the starting material, at a temperature of from 10‹ to 60‹ C. using equimolar amounts of the starting materials in the presence of at least 0À1% by weight of the starting material of a sulphonic acid ion exchange resin in the acid form. Examples describe the conversion of 2-methoxy propene to 2,2-dimethoxypropane and the use thereof in the production of 4- hydroxy-benzodioxoles.
