Abstract

1451931 Laminates GLAVERBEL-MECANIVER 27 March 1974 [30 March 1973 17 Sept 1973 (2)] 15466/73 43536/73 and 43538/73 Heading B5N A fire screening glasing panel comprises a first structural ply which is a vitreous sheet and at least one other structural ply and sandwiched between the plies, at least one plastics membrane, there being on opposite sides of the membrane(s) layers at least one of which is composed of or incorporates intumescent material, e.g. hydrated metal salt. When sufficiently heated the intumescent material becomes converted to form a thermally insulating barrier or barriers which is or are opaque or of greatly reduced infra-red radiation transmitting power as compared with the or each such layer before such conversion. The hydrated metal salt may be an aluminate, plumbate, alum, stannate, borate, phosphate or alkali metal silicate. The hydrated metal salt is preferably an alkali metal or aluminium salt. The panel may be transparent, translucent or opaque. A protective stratum may be provided between the vitreous sheet and adjacent intumescent layer, and may be a coating or sheet of plastics material, e.g. polyvinyl butyral, polyurethane or acrylic acid/methyl acrylate copolymer, or coating of anhydrous metal compound, e.g. anhydrous aluminium phosphate or zirconium, indium, tin or titanium oxide. The plastics membrane may be of polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane. The other ply may also be a vitreous sheet and at least one vitreous ply may have been chemically tempered, e.g. in bath of potassium nitrate. Alternatively the other ply may be a sheet of plastics material. A panel in which both outer plies are of vitreous material may be bonded to a polyurethane sheet via a layer of polyvinyl butyral. The layers may be bonded together with the application of heat and pressure or by means of a frame. [GB1451931A]
