Abstract
A whitener polish composition comprises an anti-foam; a thickener; a coalescent; a pH adjuster; an anti-freeze; a wax emulsion; a first surfacant; a second surfactant; titanium dioxide together with water. In a preferred embodiment, a ratio of the first surfactant to the second surfactant to the titanium dioxide is the range 1:10-12:300-350.
Description
A WHITENER POLISH COMPOSITION
This invention relates to a whitener polish composition particularly for use with shoes. Most particularly, it relates to a whitener polish for use with so-called trainer shoes.
Trainee shoes are generally white or predominantly white in colour. Hence, they can appear to be dirty and in need of polish more often than darker coloured shoes. Whiteners for such shoes are well known but, as far as it is known, the known whiteners have little or no effect on marks such as scuff marks.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a polish composition which not only whitens the shoes but also removes the marks from the shoes.
The invention, therefore, provides a whitener polish composition which comprises an anti-foam; a thickener; a coalescent; a pH adjuster; an anti-freeze; a wax emulsion; a first surfactant; a second surfactant; titanium dioxide together with water.
The wax emulsion preferably comprises a fine, particle size, aqueous dispersion of oxidized polyethylene waxes and paraffin waxes which is film forming at room temperature, is a soft and easily buffable film and has a non-volatile content of between 39-41 %; a pH value of between 8.5 and 9.5; a viscosity at 25% (iso-dis 2555 Brookfield) of up to 1000 mPa.s; and a density of approximately 0.90 kg/dmL The acrylic resin preferably comprises an aqueous polyacrylate dispersion having a non-volatile content of 36% ± 1% ; a particle size of approximately O.lgm; a pH of between 9 and 10; a viscosity at 25°C; (iso-dis 2555)(Brookfield) of up to 100 mPa.s; a minimum film forming temperature of approximately 16°C; and a density of approximately 1.05kg/dm2.

The composition also preferably comprises a preservative; a levelling aid and a thickener. Most preferably, the composition further comprises an optical brightener.
Preferably the ratio of the first surfactant to the second surfactant to the titanium dioxide is in the range 1:10-12:300-350 and most preferably 1:10.73:343.3. Preferably, the first surfactant is Triton N101 (Rohm and Haas) and the second surfactant is Orotan 731 (Rohm and Haas). Triton N-101 is a non-ionic surfactant. It is a water-soluble nonylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol containing 9-10 moles of ethylene oxide. Orotan 731 comprises the sodium salt of polymeric carboxylic acid, residual monomer, formaldehyde, and water.
Preferably, the grade of titanium dioxide used has a relatively high abrasive quality in comparison with standard grade titanium dioxide which, together with an applicator having a relatively high abrasive grade in comparison with standard grade applicators assists in the removal of marks during application of the polish.
By way of Example, the following describes a manufacturing process for the polish.
Into a suitable container or pan is placed the water followed by, if desired, a preservative in the form of acticide. To this is added the thickener in the form of Bentone which is sifted in very slowly over a period of 30 minutes under high speed stirring and then stirred under a lower speed for a further thirty minutes.
The first surfactant in the form of Orotan 731 is then slowly added with stirring at about 400 rpm. The second surfactant in the form of Triton N101 is then added followed by the coalescent, in the form of 2-ethyl hexanol, and the antifreeze, in the form of propylene glycol. To this mixture is added the anti-foam followed by the titanium dioxide. When adding the titanium dioxide, which should be done slowly, the stirring is increased to 1000 rpm and after the final addition of the titanium dioxide, stirring is continued for a further
-3forty-five minutes. Next is added the wax emulsion followed by the pH adjuster in the form of mono-ethanol amine to form a mixture. The optical brightener is added to a suitable volume of hot water prior to adding to the mixture.
The resulting composition is packaged in a suitable container which, when used with an applicator having appropriate abrasive quality will enable marks to be removed from the shoe as it is whitened.
