Abstract
A polish composition particularly for shoes comprises a wax emulsion; an acrylic resin; an anti-foam; a thickener; a coalescent; a levelling aid and water. Preferably, the wax emulsion and the acrylic resin are present in the range 1:0.6 to 0.85. In addition, the composition preferably comprises a perfume, an oil and a preservative.
Description
A POLISH
This invention relates to a polish. In particular, it relates to a polish for » shoes.
Conventional shoe polishes will, following repeated use result in a building up of polish on the shoes which will subsequently result in cracking and general deterioration of the shoe leather. It is an object of the present invention to provide a polish which will not result in a build up of polish and hence will not cause cracking and a general deterioration of the shoe leather.
The invention, therefore, provides a polish particularly for shoes which comprises a wax emulsion; an acrylic resin; an anti-foam; a thickener; a coalescent; a levelling aid and water.
The wax emulsion preferably comprises a fine, particle size, aqueous dispersion of oxidized polyethylene waxes and paraffin waxes which is film forming at room temperature, is a soft and easily buff able film and has a non-volatile content of between 39-41 %; a pH value of between 8.5 and 9.5; a viscosity at 25% (iso-dis 2555 Brookfield) of up to 1000 mPa.s and a density of approximately 0.90 kg/dm3. The acrylic resin preferably comprises an aqueous polyacrylate dispersion having a non-volatile content of 36% ± 1 %; a particle size of approximately 0. l/xm; a pH of between 9 and 10; a viscosity at 25 °C;
(iso-dis 2555)(Brookfield) of up to 100 mPa.s, a minimum film forming temperature of approximately 16°C; and a density of approximately 1.05kg/dm2.
The ratio of the wax emulsion to acrylic resin in preferably in the range 1:0.6-0.85 and most preferably 1:0.79. An oil is preferably added in the form of avocado oil. A preservative is generally used, preferably actizide spx. )
The levelling aid is preferably isopropyl alcohol. If desired a perfume may be added. Tributoxyethyl phosphate may be added which also acts as a coalescent k and aids in the formation of a film on the shoe. The coalescent is preferably 2-ethyl hexanol.

The following example serves to illustrate a method for the manufacture of the polish according to the invention. Water is first added to a suitable container followed by the preservative in the form of acticide. Then the levelling aid in the form of isopropyl alcohol is added and the resulting mixture stirred at about 500 ipm avoiding excessive foaming.
To the resulting mixture is added the wax emulsion followed by the acrylic resin, the oil and the tributoxyethyl phosphate The resulting mixture is stirred for about ten minutes. Next is added the antifoam followed by the coalescent. Suitable dyes may then be added in a volume well known to those skilled in the art.
The resulting polish has the positive characteristics of conventional polish but without the disadvantage of polish build-up and the consequent cracking of the leather.
Claims (5)
1. A polish composition particularly for shoes which comprises a wax emulsion; an acrylic resin; an anti-foam; a thickener; a coalescent; a levelling 5 aid and water.
2. A polish composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein the wax emulsion and the acrylic resin are present in the range 1:0.6 to 0.85 and most preferably 1:0.79.
3. A polish composition as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 which further comprises a perfume; an oil and a preservative.
4. A polish composition substantially as hereinbefore described.
5. A method of manufacturing a polish composition substantially as hereinbefore described and with reference to the Example.
