Abstract

A high output cooking and water heating appliance includes a cooker 10 containing an oven 12, 13, a hot plate and a water boiler 64. Two burners 35, 36 direct heat into the appliance, one, a high output burner 35, towards the boiler 64, and the other, a lower output burner 36, towards the cooking appliance. Separate fans 33, 34 supply air to the burners 35, 36 by conduits 43, 44. Associated with each burner 35, 36 is a fuel pump 37, 37A and an electrical control apparatus 38, 38a. The fans 33, 34 are located towards the rear of the appliance within a plenum base 31.

Description

The present invention relates to a high output cooking and water heating appliance. In particular, it relates to a high output domestic cooker having a water boiler contained therein.
Domestic cookers having oil burners or alternatively gas burners have over recent years developed to a higher degree of efficiency and can produce the water heating and cooking requirements of most family sized houses. Typically, such a cooker would comprise a burner, either oil or gas, a water boiler, an oven and a hot plate. Depending on the requirement for the highest heat input, the householder controls the direction in which the flame ball from the burner is directed by means of one or more mechanically moveable baffles which direct the heat towards the desired portion of the appliance. The design of these baffles has 2Q developed over the years and they are now very simple devices to operate and require very little effort on behalf of the householder. However, the difficulty with the use of baffles is that they mitigate against the complete automation of such cookers in that the householder has to be in attendance in order to move the baffles to the desired location. Consequently, such cookers do not have the same facility as, for instance, electric ovens which can be preset to commence cooking as a specified time and to stop cooking after the elapse of a certain period.
Another disadvantage associated with these cookers is that there is always connected to each a burner, a fan forcing air through the burner for the combustion of fuel. The combination of the burner and the fan together produces a large noise output which is not possible to always reduce to an acceptable level by means of insulation. - 2 365384 The object of the invention is to alleviate the disadvantages associated with the prior art cookers.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a high output cooking and water heating appliance comprising a cooker housing containing an oven, hot plate and water boiler, a base beneath the housing, at least two fuel burners for directing heat into the body of the cooker housing, a fan remote from but connected to each burner, the fan being separated from the burner by means of an elongate conduit, a fuel pump located remote from the burner and in communication therewith and an electrical control apparatus associated with each burner.
Advantageously, the fan housing is located towards the rear of the cooker and the burner is located towards the front of the cooker.
Conveniently, a separate burner is provided for the boiler and a lower output burner is provided for the cooking appliances.
Advantageously, the boiler has a plurality of hollow tubular pipes through which heat from the burner can pass.
Conveniently, a ceramic glass inspection port is located adjacent each burner for inspection purposes.
The invention will hereinafter be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which show by way of example only, one embodiment of a cooking and water heating appliance according to the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the exterior of a completed cooker according to the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cooker with each of the front doors of the cooker opened to show the main heating oven and inspection ports associated with the burners located in the cooker; Figure 3 is a cross-sectional front view through the cooker showing the heat flow path within the cooker; Figure 4 is a perspective partially cut away view showing the main heating components of the cooker; Figure 5 is a perspective view from above of the boiler and associated manifold and steel work; Figure 6 is a perspective view of an enlarged scale of a flange for connection to a burner of the cooker; and Figure 7 is a cut-away front view showing a different arrangement of burners and boiler.
Referring to the drawings and initially to Figure 1, the cooker (10) includes a hot plate (11 ), a main cooking oven (1 2), a heating oven (13), four doors (15) on the front of the cooker and controls (16).
As shown in Figure 2, each of the doors is pivotally attached to the main body of the cooker (10) and open outwards to allow access to the main oven (12), the heating oven (13) and to allow access to the burner box (20) for heating the water boiler, inspection window (21) and inspection window (22) for the cooking appliance burner.
The operation of the cooker will now be more particularly described with reference to Figures 3 and 4.
The main body of the cooker (10) is a cast iron construction and is situated on top of a plenum base (31) which is used to house the air duct system. Located at the rear of the base (31) is an air intake (32) which in the present embodiment includes a splitter box (42) for providing air input to the burners (33) and (34). The splitter box is in a stepped configuration so as to ensure that the higher capacity fan (33) does not starve the lower capacity fan of air. The fan (33) supplies air to the boiler burner and the fan (34) supplies air to the cooker burner (36). Supplying the air between each of the two devices is a pipe (43, 44) which is of a plastics material, typically PVC. At each end of the pipe (43, 44) is a flexible connection (45) to enable the connection to be made to each device. Associated with each burner (35, 36) is a fuel pump (37, 37a) respectively. Each burner and fan is controlled by a separate electrical control box (38, 38a) respectively and an associated electrical transformer (39, 39a) respectively. The burner (35) is horizontally mounted so that the flame produced is directed horizontally into the fire box beneath the boiler (64) and the cooker burner (36) is vertically mounted so that the ball of flame produced is directed upwardly to the fire box associated with the hot plates and oven. An inspection window (21) of ceramic glass is located above the burner (35) and an inspection window (22) of ceramic glass is located adjacent the burner (36). The output of each burner can be selected to suit the particular requirements. Typically, the burner for the boiler will have a capacity of say 120,000 BTU and the burner for the cooker will have a capacity of say 60,000 BTU. The fuel pumps (37, 37a) are diaphram type pumps and can be adjusted to provide between 90-140 psi.
The capacity of the burner is also determined by the jet size associated with it. The jet size can typically be of the range 0.45 to 0.75 US gallons per minute. By having a separate control box (38, 39) and a transformer (39, 39a), it is possible to provide an independent facility for upgrading and also facilitates maintenance.
The boiler (64) includes a number of hollow pipes (65) through which the heat and flame from the burner (36) travel to heat the water and exit as exhaust gases.
Located within each pipe is a spiral flue liner (61) made of stainless steel (only one of these liners is shown in Figure 4 for clarity purposes). The function of these liners is to slow down the heat and flame as it travels through the boiler, therefore, to enable greater heat transfer to take place.
As shown in Figure 5, the top of the boiler (64) is provided by a manifold (70) to which a conventional hood is attached for transferring the exhaust gases to the exit port at the rear of the cooker. Attached to the boiler is a support frame for the cooker burner (36). A conventional flue pipe is provided at the back of the cooker oven. Also provided at the top of the boiler (64), although not shown in the drawings, is a muffle box cover which is lined with ceramic wool which is retained in place with expanded wire mesh. This used to reduce the noise level to an acceptable limit for the exhaust gases.
The cooker includes a fire valve (63) which will cut off the supply of fuel in the event of fire or any mishap being detected.
As shown in Figure 6, is the air inlet flange (75) which is bolted to the burner box (33, 36) in the horizontal or vertical position as required.
With the cooker described and shown, it is possible to use automatic timers to control the operation of one or both of the burners (35, 36), so that the oven or water boiler may be programmed to be turned on or off as required.
An alternative embodiment is shown in Figure 7 in which a chamber boiler 95 including a zig-zag baffle arrangement may ยท . be used in place of the hollow pipe boiler. The fans are separated from the burners by a short pipe.
It will of course be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details described herein, which are given by way of example only, and that various modifications and alterations are possible without departing from the scope of the invention.
