貯蔵弾性率は、TA社のDMA Q800を使用して測定した。具体的に、Multi-Frequency-Strain modeで温度25℃、周波数6rad/sec、Force 0.01N及びRamp rate 3°/minの条件で貯蔵弾性率値を記録した。
液晶素子の製造
第1の基材層として厚さが約145μmであり、横×縦面積が900mm×600mmのPETフィルムを用意した。第1の基材層上にITO(indium-tin-oxide)を50nmの厚さで蒸着して第1の電極層を形成した。第1の電極層上に粘着剤組成物(KR-3700、信越社)をバーコートした後、約150℃で約5分間乾燥し、厚さが約10μmの粘着剤層を形成した。粘着剤層の貯蔵弾性率は約0.1MPaであった。第1の基材層、第1の電極層及び粘着剤層の組み合わせを上部基板と呼ぶ。
第1の外郭基板、第1の中間層、第1の偏光子、第2の中間層、前記製造された液晶素子、第3の中間層、第2の偏光子、第4の中間層及び第2の外郭基板を順次含み、液晶素子の側面を囲む外郭層を含む積層体を用意した。第1の外郭基板に比べて第2の外郭基板を重力方向に配置した。
外郭層にMD方向の貯蔵弾性率が約6,000MPaであり、TD方向の貯蔵弾性率が約3,000MPaであり、厚さが145μmのPETフィルム2枚を、貯蔵弾性率が約0.1MPaであり、厚さが10μmの粘着剤層(KR-3700、信越社)を介して付着した積層体を使用したことを除いては、実施例1と同様に工程を行って光学デバイスを製造した。実施例2において外郭層の全厚は、約300μmであった。
外郭層に貯蔵弾性率が約100MPaであり、厚さが約380μmのTPUフィルム(Argotec社)を使用したことを除いては、実施例1と同様に工程を行って光学デバイスを製造した。
外郭層に貯蔵弾性率が約100MPaであり、厚さが約150μmのTPUフィルム(Argotec社)を使用したことを除いては、実施例1と同様に工程を行って光学デバイスを製造した。
外郭層に貯蔵弾性率が約100MPaであり、厚さが約380μmのTPUフィルム(Argotec社)と貯蔵弾性率が約100MPaであり、厚さが約150μmのTPUフィルム(Argotec社)の積層体を使用したことを除いては、実施例1と同様に工程を行って光学デバイスを製造した。比較例2において外郭層の全厚は、約530μmであった。
実施例1及び比較例1で製造された光学デバイスを電圧が印加されていない状態で押さえ及び集中不良が発生するかどうかを観察した。実施例1では押さえ不良及び集中不良が観察されなかったが、図4及び図5に示すように、比較例1は、押さえ及び集中不良が観察された。図4は、比較例1の光学デバイスのカメラ写真であり、図5は、比較例1の光学デバイスの顕微鏡イメージである。図4において赤色で示すように(左側表示)、集中不良領域の場合、周辺領域より二色性染料の濃度が高いので周辺領域より暗く見え、図4に緑色で示すように(右側表示)、押さえ不良領域の場合、周辺領域より二色性染料の濃度が低いので、周辺領域よりも明るく見える。比較例2は、合着工程においてガラス基板が破損した。図5(A)は、比較例1の押さえ不良を示し、図5(B)は、比較例1の集中不良を示す。

- 第1の外郭基板及び第1の外郭基板と対向して配置された第2の外郭基板、前記第1の外郭基板と前記第2の外郭基板の間に存在する液晶素子並びに前記液晶素子の側面を囲む外郭層、及び、前記第1の外郭基板と前記液晶素子の間並びに前記液晶素子と前記第2の外郭基板の間にそれぞれ位置する少なくとも1つ以上の中間層を含み、
前記液晶素子は、第1の基材層、前記第1の基材層の内側面に形成された第1の電極層、前記第1の基材層の内側面に存在する粘着剤層、前記第1の基材層と対向配置される第2の基材層、前記第2の基材層の内側面に形成された第2の電極層、前記第2の基材層の内側面に存在するスペーサ、及び前記第1の基材層と前記第2の基材層の間に位置する液晶層を含み、

- 前記外郭層の貯蔵弾性率G1と前記粘着剤層の貯蔵弾性率G2の差(G1-G2)は、0MPa~9999.99MPaの範囲内である、請求項1又は2に記載の光学デバイス。
- 前記外郭層の25℃における貯蔵弾性率G1は、0.1MPa~10,000MPaの範囲内である、請求項1から3のいずれか一項に記載の光学デバイス。
- 前記外郭層は、高分子フィルムを含む、請求項1から4のいずれか一項に記載の光学デバイス。
- 前記液晶層は、外部エネルギー印加を通じて第1の配向状態及び前記第1の配向状態と異なる配向状態の間をスイッチングする、請求項1から5のいずれか一項に記載の光学デバイス。
- 前記スペーサは、前記第1の基材層と前記第2の基材層の間に間隔を維持するパターン化されたスペーサである、請求項1から6のいずれか一項に記載の光学デバイス。
- 前記第2の基材層の面積Aに対する前記スペーサの面積Bの比B/Aは、5%~50%の範囲内である、請求項1から7のいずれか一項に記載の光学デバイス。
- 前記液晶素子は、前記第2の電極層の内側面に存在する配向膜をさらに含み、前記第1の基材層の内側面には配向膜を含まない、請求項1から8のいずれか一項に記載の光学デバイス。
- 前記液晶素子は、前記中間層及び前記外郭層によってカプセル化されている、請求項1から9のいずれか一項に記載の光学デバイス。
- 前記少なくとも1つ以上の中間層は、総厚さの和が800μm以上である、請求項1から10のいずれか一項に記載の光学デバイス。
- 前記少なくとも1つ以上の中間層は、熱可塑性ポリウレタン接着剤層、ポリアミド接着剤層、ポリエステル接着剤層、EVA(Ethylene Vinyl Acetate)接着剤層、アクリル接着剤層、シリコーン接着剤層、またはポリオレフィン接着剤層である、請求項1から11のいずれか一項に記載の光学デバイス。
- 1つ以上の開口部が形成されている車体、及び前記開口部に取り付けられた請求項1から12のいずれか一項に記載の光学デバイスを含む、自動車。
