Origami crafts have been developed since ancient times, especially in Japan, and in recent years, their excellence has been recognized in other countries as well, leading to a worldwide boom.

Origami is also called Chiyogami, and as the name suggests, the material used was originally paper, and the most popular paper was washi paper printed with various patterns such as hemp leaves and pique flower patterns. It seems that colored cellophane film is also being used recently.

The reason why synthetic resin films are not used in origami is probably due to the preconception that they are not suitable for origami. In fact, for example, films such as polyethylene and polypropylene generally have the disadvantage that they tend to stretch vertically and horizontally with a small amount of tension, but they also have the fatal disadvantage that they are difficult to crease and are difficult to work with. Because it is not suitable for origami at all,
It is no wonder that such preconceptions arise.

The inventors of the present invention conducted intensive research to find an excellent origami made of a synthetic resin film that is suitable for origami crafts and has a slightly different feel not found in conventional origami. We have discovered that it is easy to use, and has many advantages over conventional cellulose-based origami in its finish, leading to the creation of the present invention.

Polystyrene film is rigid due to its molecular structure, and is difficult to crease by just folding it lightly, but the creases are well fixed by squeezing with your fingers, and its crease retention is even better than paper.

The thickness of polystyrene film is 10 to 100μ.
is desirable, and 15 to 60μ is more desirable. If it is thinner than 10μ, the strength of the film will be too small;
If it is larger, the film will easily break at the crease.

The polystyrene film is preferably oriented in two dimensions by biaxial stretching. The degree of orientation is in the range of 3 to 20, preferably 7 to 13, in terms of thermal shrinkage stress (ORS) in both length and width. An unstretched film is easy to fold, but the creases tend to whiten, and the film tends to stretch, which is undesirable. In addition, when the degree of orientation exceeds 20, creases are difficult to form. ORS (Orientation
Release Stress) according to ASTM D1504-70.
It was calculated using the maximum value of shrinkage stress at 170 mm in length, 40 mm in width, and 160°C.

It is desirable that the polystyrene film of the present invention be antistatically treated. A so-called anti-fogging treatment may be used, but it requires the introduction and attachment of a substance having a hydrophilic group, and either kneading or coating of a treatment agent may be used. This is to prevent films from adhering to each other due to static electricity during origami work, which would disturb the origami work, and to prevent dust from adhering to the paper due to static electricity.

Furthermore, although colorless and transparent materials are not excluded, materials that are colored like Chiyogami or printed with various colored patterns are preferable.

The origami made from the polystyrene film of this invention has excellent transparency and gloss, and is easy to fold, and the degree of fixation of the fold can be adjusted by the degree of squeezing with your fingers. By squeezing firmly at the crease, you can create a firmly fixed crease. Tightly squeezed creases hold better than paper creases. In addition, the film is rigid and has a strong finish, and the workmanship is good. The crafted items have a sparkling texture, are light, difficult to get wet with water, have good water resistance, and do not lose their shape.
Even though it's transparent, it doesn't feel as sticky as cellophane origami, and it has a crunchy feel to it. It has good coloring properties and prints beautifully. You can also write or paint with magic ink.

In addition to being used for the same purposes as traditional origami, such as origami crafts and paper cutting crafts, the origami of this invention can be used for crafts that float on water because of its water resistance, as well as for objects that are easily wetted by outdoor rain, such as teruteru bozu and Tanabata decorations. Ideal as origami for crafts.
