Polyacrylic acid-based resins that are made water-insoluble through crosslinking and have a high water-swellability are used as water-absorbing agents for sanitary napkins, disposable diapers, and the like.

It is produced by polymerizing an aqueous solution of acrylic acid neutralized with an alkali metal salt, and is swollen in water but insoluble, so that a moderate amount of crosslinking is introduced.

In order to obtain a high molecular weight polymer, it is effective to increase the monomer concentration and conduct the polymerization at a relatively low temperature.

Polymerization of a monomer aqueous solution with a relatively high concentration occurs vigorously, and the temperature of the system rapidly rises due to the heat of reaction, resulting in a boiling state. - Since the reaction mixture becomes gel-like due to the formation of the polymer, evaporation of water vapor is hindered, and the reaction goes out of control, resulting in the so-called popcorn phenomenon. Added to this is the gel effect, which significantly increases the polymerization apparatus due to the increased viscosity of the solution, making temperature control more difficult and making it difficult to obtain a product of desirable quality.

Therefore, stirring the mixture during the polymerization process involves equipment difficulties. Furthermore, it is known that when a rubbery mixture is kneaded under strong shear stress, the polymer collapses, significantly impairing the quality of the product.

The soluble portion is derived from low molecular weight polymers. At the stage where the polymerization reaction progresses and a gel effect is observed, the termination reaction is suppressed and a high molecular weight polymer is produced. Low molecular weight polymers are mainly produced at the beginning of the polymerization reaction. Therefore, at the beginning of the reaction,
It is important to promote smooth generation of water vapor under reduced pressure.

A slurry mixture of 596 and (3) a slurry mixture prepared by adding 61 weight of purified wood pulp as a monomer thereto was polymerized using potassium persulfate, and the temperature rise of the anti-reaction system was compared. In case (1), there was a rapid temperature rise and a popcorn phenomenon, and the maximum temperature exceeded 120°C. In cases (2) and (3), water vapor was generated smoothly, with almost no temperature difference observed at around 100°C in the initial stage, and reached the maximum temperature after gelation, which was 110°C and 105°C, respectively. (2)
, (3) has a higher concentration and a higher polymerization reaction rate than (1), but the temperature is kept low due to the smooth generation of water vapor.

As a continuous polymerization method, a belt conveyor type can be adopted. It is preferable to control the polymerization temperature to 100°C or less, and usually to 60 to 80°C, so that the polymerization is carried out under a reduced pressure of 0.4 to 0.8 atmospheres. The polymerization reaction is generally substantially complete within 10 to 20 minutes.
