In arc stud welding, an arc is generated between the stud and the base metal, and when a suitable molten pool is formed, the two are rapidly pressed together and the stud is planted. Studs for arc stud welding were made of objects with circular cross sections, such as bolts and various pins. However, according to the inventor's experiments, when stud welding the tip of a plate or angle material to the base metal, good stud welding cannot be achieved even if the welding process is performed in the same way as conventional stud welding of bolts or pins. It became clear that it couldn't be done. That is, when stud welding is performed on the tip of an angle or plate material that is relatively wide compared to the thickness of the plate, the arc during welding is generated only within a certain range from the center of the angle or the like. Further, more arcs were concentrated at the center in the width direction of the plate, and more melting occurred in that area. Therefore, there has been a problem in that both ends of the plate material in the width direction are not welded.

Therefore, as a result of various experiments, the inventor of the present invention found that even if the plate or angle material is relatively wide, by cutting both ends of the tip surface into an appropriate shape, the arc can be uniformly spread to the cutout part. It became popular and it was discovered that good stud welding could be done. The reason why this happens is unknown, but based on this discovery, the present invention experimentally confirmed the conditions of the notch, and based on that, welded a plate or angle material with excellent weldability. The purpose of this study is to provide a study guide, and its main points are as follows.

In the range of the above configuration, even if the stud is made of a relatively wide plate or angle material, the welding part tip surface will be uniformly welded, and the excess of the welding part will be welded over the entire circumference. (2) Next, the width A from the center line l to the side edge of the angle material is A = 10 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 29 mm,
30 mm, and plate thicknesses t=3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, and 6 mm were prepared for each width A. Then, as shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, notches 4 were formed on both side edges of the distal end surface 2. The reason why this notch 4 is provided is that no arc is generated on both side edges of the tip surface 2 during stud welding without the notch. In other words, an arc that starts from the center gradually grows toward the periphery in the width direction, but in the case of relatively wide angle materials (including plate materials), the arc grows only a certain distance from the center, and beyond that, the arc grows toward the periphery in the width direction. does not spread. There was also a tendency for more arcs to be emitted toward the center. Therefore, it has been found that no molten pool is formed at the peripheral edge portion, resulting in poor welding. Therefore, this corner is cut diagonally in advance to provide a notch, and the width B (length from the edge to the center) of the notch is 1 to 2 times the thickness t of the stud body, and the angle θ
(The angle of intersection with the tip surface 2) was set in 5° increments from 5° to 40°.

<Experimental Results> For stud welding performed under the above conditions, the appearance of each welded part was observed, and the studs were struck from the side with a hammer to check the weld strength. As a result, it was found that when the cutout angle θ of the cutout portion 4 was less than 10°, and when θ was greater than 35°, there were portions that were not welded on both edges of the welded portion. That is, when θ is less than 10° and when θ is more than 35°, the arc does not grow to the end in the width direction,
There is a portion at the end where no arc occurs. The arc stud welding machine used in this experiment had a maximum welding current of 2,000 to 2,300 amperes, and the welding current was adjusted to achieve the best welding according to the thickness of each plate and other factors. Then, each stud main body was held by an electrode holder of a welding machine (not shown), and an arc shield 5 as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 was fitted onto the tip of the stud. The arc shield 5 is made of ceramic and has a stud fitting portion slightly larger than the cross section of each stud, and gas vent grooves 6 are formed at appropriate intervals on the lower end surface. Then, as shown in FIG. 4, the stud body 1 and the arc shield 5 are positioned and energized, and only the stud body 1 is pulled upward slightly. Then, an arc is generated between the stud and the base material, and when a suitable molten pool is generated, the two are automatically pressed together rapidly and the stud is planted. This time is about 1 second. The welding operation is then completed by breaking the arc shield with a hammer.

<Experiment 2> Next, as shown in FIGS. 7 to 9, an angle member having a wider width than that of the first embodiment was used, as shown in the same figure, with only the tip end having the same dimensions as in the first embodiment. The experiment was conducted by forming the structure as follows. As a result, the same results as in the previous experiment could be obtained.
